To use ChatGPT with an image, attach it to a conversation, then ask a specific question or request a description. To compare images, attach them together and name the differences you want checked. ChatGPT can help interpret photos, screenshots, diagrams, charts, and documents, but its visual readings can be wrong—verify important details against the original.
How to add an image to ChatGPT

Open a ChatGPT conversation on the web or in the mobile app.

Select the plus icon, then choose Add photos & files. You can also drag an image into the text area or paste one from your clipboard.

Type what you want ChatGPT to do and send the message with the image. For example: “Describe the objects and their arrangement in this photo,” or “What does this warning message on the screenshot say?”

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ says you can ask about objects, analyze documents, or explore visual content. Its capabilities overview also describes asking questions, extracting content, and getting help interpreting uploaded images, diagrams, screenshots, and charts.
How to get a useful image description or answer
Say what you need rather than uploading an image without a question. You can request a general description, ask about a particular object, or focus on visible text or another feature. If one area matters most, mark it up before uploading; OpenAI recommends this as a way to direct attention.
For text-heavy images, enlarge the text while keeping enough surrounding context to make it understandable. If the image is rotated or upside down, correct its orientation before uploading when possible. ChatGPT can misread orientation and text, and OpenAI cautions that performance with text in some non-Latin alphabets, including Japanese and Korean, may be weaker.
How to compare two or more images
Attach the images in the same conversation and specify the comparison dimensions that matter. For example: “Compare these two room layouts for visible differences in furniture placement, lighting, and obstacles. List only what you can see, and mark anything uncertain.” This is a prompting approach, not a guarantee that the comparison will be accurate.

Choose criteria that fit the task. Useful dimensions might include:

Which objects or text are visible, and whether something is present in one image but not another.

Relative placement, color, or visible condition.

Which observations are clear and which are uncertain.
Follow up if you need the comparison narrowed or clarified. You can add more images in later turns to deepen or shift the discussion. Check close calls yourself: precise spatial localization can be difficult, and subtle differences in charts may be missed.

Supported image types, size, and access
The OpenAI Help Center’s FAQ lists PNG, JPEG (.jpeg or .jpg), and non-animated GIF as supported still-image formats. It states a limit of 20 MB per image. There is no fixed universal number of images per prompt in the FAQ: the number that works depends on image size and accompanying text. If an upload fails, try using fewer or smaller images.
OpenAI says image inputs are available on Free and paid ChatGPT plans on the web and iOS or Android, subject to plan-specific usage limits and account settings. Availability can also vary with workspace settings, region, client version, and selected model. Check the options in your own ChatGPT interface rather than assuming every account has identical access.
What image analysis may get wrong
OpenAI warns that unclear or ambiguous images may be interpreted less accurately. Other documented weak points include:

Charts where series depend on color or line style.

Exact spatial positions, such as the precise placement of pieces on a chessboard, and object counts, which may be approximate.

Panoramic and fisheye images.
Images are resized before analysis, which can affect their original dimensions; original file names and metadata are not processed. Do not rely on ChatGPT to interpret specialized medical images such as CT scans, or use it as a source of medical advice. For consequential decisions, inspect the image directly and seek qualified specialist judgment where appropriate.

On an individual ChatGPT account, eligible content may be used to improve models. To change the setting for new conversations, open Settings → Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says that when this setting is off, new conversations are not used to train its models. The control can differ for signed-out use, plans, and managed workspaces.
Do not assume the same data handling applies to every account type. OpenAI’s Data controls in ChatGPT explains the setting, while its file uploads guidance distinguishes business offerings such as the API and ChatGPT Enterprise from individual services. Retention and workspace policies can vary, so check the terms and controls for the account you are using before sharing confidential material.
