Router lights do not have universal meanings: the same color or blinking pattern can signal different things on different models. Identify your router or gateway, match the light to its label or icon, and check the manufacturer’s guide before troubleshooting. If the Internet or WAN light is off on an Ethernet setup, start with the cable between the modem and router; then test the modem connection separately if your setup allows it.
What do the LEDs on your router mean?
LEDs show the status of a particular function or connection, such as power, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, DSL, or Internet access. Their meaning depends on the device and sometimes on its operating mode. A blinking light may be normal activity, startup, synchronization, pairing, recovery, or a fault; blinking alone is not enough to diagnose a problem.
Find the exact model name and, if available, hardware revision on the device label or in its administration page. Then look up the light’s label and pattern in that model’s manual or official support page. A gateway supplied by an internet provider, a modem-router, a standalone router, and a mesh node may have different indicators and instructions.
Examples of model-specific meanings
These examples illustrate why a general color chart is unreliable; they apply only to the named products or product families.

- NETGEAR: NETGEAR says meanings can vary by router age and model. In the guide’s covered devices, a solid Internet LED means the connection is ready, a blinking white LED indicates traffic, and an off Wi-Fi LED means the radio is off. See NETGEAR’s LED guide.
- Verizon Router: The official chart for the named Verizon Router, dated October 6, 2026, identifies solid white as normal operation, solid yellow as no Internet or a detected hardware/system issue, and fast-blinking red as a system update error. See Verizon’s router light guide.
- Linksys ISP routers with ACS support: On the parent router, solid red means Internet is down; blinking red can mean the parent is not connected to the modem or a child node is disconnected. The MR7300 family has separate guidance. See Linksys support.
- Huawei WS318n: Steady red means the described router is not connected to the Internet; a rapid double-red blink is described as a recovery process. See Huawei’s WS318n guidance.
- D-Link DSL-2680: In this older model’s manual, blinking DSL means the line is synchronizing. A solid red Internet light can indicate no DHCP/PPPoE response, failed PPPoE authentication, or no IP address. These meanings should not be applied to other D-Link products. See the D-Link DSL-2680 manual.
How to troubleshoot router lights
1. Identify the light and the device
Write down the brand, exact model, hardware revision if shown, and whether the device is a standalone router, modem-router, ISP gateway, or mesh node. Note the light’s label or icon, its color, and whether it is off, steady, or blinking. If the router is part of a mesh system, note whether it is the parent router or a child node.
2. Check power and the model guide
Look up that exact device’s LED chart before assuming a dark light is a fault: some features can be disabled, and some routers let you control their LEDs. If no lights are on, check the outlet and the supplied power adapter according to the manufacturer’s directions. Do not substitute a power supply unless the device maker says it is compatible. See D-Link’s status-light guidance.

3. If the Internet or WAN light is off, check the Ethernet link
For an Ethernet WAN connection, confirm the cable runs from the modem’s Ethernet output to the router’s WAN or Internet port, and that both ends are firmly seated. Use an RJ45 Ethernet cable, not an RJ11 phone cable. Inspect it for damage; if it is worn or suspect, try a known-good CAT5e-or-higher Ethernet cable. This may help with a faulty wired link, but it will not fix a DSL line problem, an ISP outage, or incorrect router settings. See TP-Link’s WAN-port troubleshooting guide.
4. Test the modem connection separately, when appropriate
If your modem and service support it, connect a computer directly to the modem and test Internet access. Follow the modem or ISP’s instructions for this test. If the computer still cannot get online, the problem may be with the modem or internet service; contact the provider or investigate the modem before changing router settings. If direct access works, focus next on the Ethernet cable, router WAN port, or router configuration.

5. Check the router side if the modem test works
Try a known-good Ethernet cable and check the router’s guide for its WAN-port indicators and troubleshooting procedure. TP-Link describes additional port tests and, on certain supported models reporting “WAN Port Unplugged” despite a link, a WAN negotiation-speed setting. That setting is model-specific, not a general fix; do not change it unless the exact router’s instructions call for it. Avoid guessing at advanced port or connection settings.
6. If your connection is DSL, follow the DSL instructions
A DSL modem-router connects to the ISP phone line through its DSL port. A DSL light may indicate synchronization with the line, so a blinking light can reflect that process rather than Ethernet activity. Check that the phone line is connected to the DSL port and consult the device’s DSL status guide. Ethernet-WAN steps do not diagnose a DSL line, and an Ethernet cable should not be plugged into the DSL port.

7. Escalate with the details that help support
If the light remains abnormal, contact your ISP or the manufacturer with the router model, hardware and firmware versions, modem details, the light’s label and pattern, and the outcome of each check. Use the maker’s instructions before attempting a factory reset or firmware recovery. A factory reset may erase your network and provider configuration.

What not to infer from a router light
- Do not treat a color as universal. Red, yellow, white, and green can mean different things across devices.
- Do not assume blinking means failure. It may show traffic, booting, synchronization, pairing, or recovery; check the exact model’s guide.
- Do not reset just to clear a light. Resetting can erase configuration, and a light may point to a physical link or ISP issue instead.
- Do not change a WAN negotiation setting based on a generic tip. Follow instructions for the exact supported model and symptom.
