First confirm that the console supports internal SSD replacement at all: a microSD card slot does not establish that an internal SSD can be upgraded.
1. Identify the exact handheld model
Record the make, full model name, and revision shown on the device or in its system information. Storage rules are model-specific; a product family name alone may not distinguish devices with different internal layouts or supported drives.
2. Confirm that its internal SSD is replaceable
Look for the manufacturer’s official storage or service documentation for that exact model. Confirm that it supports internal SSD replacement and follow the instructions for opening and servicing that device. Do not treat a factory-installed SSD configuration as an installation guide or as certification of every retail replacement.
For example, ASUS lists the ROG Ally X (2024) with PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSDs in the 2280 form factor. That published configuration is a useful starting point for comparing a candidate drive, but it does not by itself establish that every aftermarket 2280 drive will fit or work. 3. Compare the drive’s complete specifications
Check the candidate drive’s manufacturer specification sheet—not just its product name or advertised speed—and compare these requirements with the handheld’s documentation:
- Interface and protocol: Match the supported connection and protocol, such as PCIe NVMe. Connector type or keying may also matter.
- Physical fit: Confirm the specified M.2 form factor and the full available dimensions, including drive length, width, and thickness. Account for any label, shield, or heat spreader if the device documentation sets clearance limits.
- Capacity: Check the maximum capacity the device supports, if the manufacturer states one.
- Cooling and other constraints: Follow any published thermal, power, or firmware requirements. Do not assume a heat spreader will fit inside a handheld’s enclosure.
Interface and size are separate checks: matching one does not guarantee the other. If the official documentation does not state a limit, do not infer one from a different handheld or from a similarly named device.

4. Use other consoles’ specifications only as comparisons
Compatibility limits do not transfer between consoles. Sony’s PS5 guidance, for example, specifies an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 drive, 250 GB–8 TB capacity, supported lengths of 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110, dimensional limits that include a heat-dissipation mechanism, and a recommended sequential read speed of 5500 MB/s or higher. It also says M.2 SATA is unsupported and effective heat dissipation is required. These are PS5 requirements, not handheld-console requirements. PlayStation PS5 M.2 SSD requirements
5. Check removable storage separately
A removable card is a separate expansion option, with its own slot requirements; support for it does not confirm that an internal SSD is replaceable. Steam Support says Steam Deck microSD cards must be formatted before use and supports UHS-I cards rated class 3 or better. UHS-II and UHS-III cards are expected to work, but their higher data-transfer speeds are not supported. This guidance is for the microSD slot, not internal SSD replacement. Compare two SSDs in the right order
When evaluating alternatives for a specific handheld, compare interface and protocol, physical fit, capacity, and thermal or clearance requirements first. Advertised sequential speed and price are secondary unless the device maker identifies them as compatibility requirements. A match on the published specification is a screening step, not a guarantee of compatibility; use the exact model’s official guidance before buying or opening the device.
