If Windows shows a drive as RAW, stop using it and recover important files before trying to repair or format the drive. A RAW status means Windows cannot use the volume’s filesystem as presented; it does not, by itself, establish why the problem happened or whether the drive is physically healthy. Recovery and making the drive usable again are separate tasks.

What to do first when a drive appears as RAW

  1. Stop writing to the affected drive. Do not save files to it, format or initialize it, or create a new partition before attempting recovery. New writes can overwrite data that may still be recoverable.
  2. Check whether it stays detected. If the drive disconnects, behaves inconsistently, or contains irreplaceable data, consider a professional data recovery service before attempting software recovery. The sources cited here do not provide a hardware diagnostic procedure or guarantee an outcome.
  3. Prepare a separate destination. Connect another drive or filesystem with enough free space for recovered files. Never save recovered data back to the RAW source.

Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery documentation states: “The source and destination drives must be different.” CGSecurity gives the same practical warning for PhotoRec: its output should go to a filesystem other than the source (PhotoRec documentation).

Choose a recovery path that matches the problem

Option Best fit What to expect
Windows File Recovery Attempting to recover lost local files on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Microsoft documents Extensive mode for corrupted disks and for FAT or exFAT volumes. Recovery is not guaranteed; overwritten data may no longer be recoverable. Source and destination must be different drives. Microsoft Support
TestDisk A lost partition or a boot-sector problem. CGSecurity describes it as a utility for recovering lost partitions and repairing boot sectors. It is not the same as carving individual files from a damaged filesystem. TestDisk documentation
PhotoRec Extracting files from a corrupted filesystem when preserving original filenames and folders is not essential. It identifies files by their content rather than relying on intact filesystem metadata, so recovered files generally do not retain their original names or directory structure. Save results to another filesystem. PhotoRec documentation

These are recovery approaches, not proof that the drive is healthy. The right choice depends on whether you need to restore partition structure or extract files, whether the drive remains stable, and whether you can accept losing original names and folders.

Attempt file recovery with Windows File Recovery

Windows File Recovery is Microsoft’s command-line tool for attempting recovery of lost local files. Its documentation covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft also notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that date does not change the requirement to keep the recovery destination separate from the source.

  1. Connect a separate destination drive and confirm it has enough free space. Do not use the RAW drive as the destination.
  2. Open Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guide and follow its current command syntax. Identify the affected volume as the source and the other drive as the destination.
  3. Select the mode according to Microsoft’s guidance for the filesystem and condition. Microsoft recommends Extensive mode for a corrupted disk and for FAT or exFAT.
  4. Allow the recovery attempt to run, then inspect the destination for the files you need. Microsoft warns that recovery can take time and may be unsuccessful, particularly if data has been overwritten.

If Windows File Recovery cannot access the volume or does not find the files, do not respond by saving files to the RAW source. Consider whether TestDisk’s partition-recovery role or PhotoRec’s file-carving approach better matches the problem.

When TestDisk or PhotoRec may be a better fit

Use TestDisk for partition or boot-sector problems

TestDisk is intended for recovering lost partitions and repairing boot sectors, according to CGSecurity’s documentation. Consider it when the issue appears to involve missing partition structure rather than simply retrieving individual files. Its stated role does not establish that it can fix every volume Windows labels RAW.

Use PhotoRec when extracting files matters more than their original organization

PhotoRec can recover files from a corrupted filesystem by recognizing file content. Because it does not depend on intact filesystem metadata for original paths, filenames and folder structure generally are not preserved. Choose a different drive or filesystem for the recovered output; never write it to the source (CGSecurity’s PhotoRec documentation).

After recovery: verify files before reusing the drive

  1. Open important recovered files from the destination drive to check that they are usable.
  2. Keep the recovered copies on the separate destination while deciding what to do with the source.
  3. Only after you have recovered and checked what matters should you decide whether to reformat or replace the source drive. Formatting is a step toward reusing a volume, not a data-recovery method.

The sources above describe recovery tools and precautions, but do not establish why a particular drive became RAW or provide a universal repair procedure. Avoid treating CHKDSK as a guaranteed fix for every RAW volume.
