Install Visual Studio with Microsoft’s Visual Studio Installer, then unlock the edition using the method tied to your license: Community generally needs no paid license, an assigned subscription is verified by signing in, and a retail subscription is activated with its purchase key. Installing the IDE and entering a product key are separate steps; a Visual Studio 2026 subscriber does not need an IDE product key.
Choose the right activation path first
The steps depend on your edition, Visual Studio version, and how you obtained access. Use this guide to identify the route that matches your situation.

Install Visual Studio
1. Download the installer
Download Visual Studio from Microsoft’s installation instructions or the official source for your version. If your organization supplies Visual Studio, use its approved download route. The installer’s Available tab lists products it can install; to obtain a particular release, use Microsoft’s release history.
2. Run the bootstrapper with administrator permissions
Open the downloaded bootstrapper, such as VisualStudioSetup.exe or an edition-named installer, and approve the administrator prompt. Accept the Microsoft license and privacy prompts to continue.

3. Select workloads and components
Choose the workloads that match your development work. Workloads determine which project templates and tools are available in the IDE. You can also select individual components, language packs, and installation locations as needed; those options are not required for every installation.
On a first installation, you can choose the IDE and download-cache locations. Microsoft says changing those locations later requires uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Studio, so choose them deliberately.

4. Complete installation
Start the installation from the Installer and wait for it to finish. Open Visual Studio from the Start menu, then follow the activation steps for your edition and license channel below.
Activate or unlock your edition
Community
Use the Community edition without entering a product key or purchasing a subscription. Microsoft notes that users may receive periodic sign-in prompts; signing in can prevent interruptions. See Microsoft’s installation guidance and licensing guidance.

Professional or Enterprise trial
Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2022 licensing page gives Professional and Enterprise a 30-day evaluation, extendable once to 90 days by signing in. After the evaluation, continued use requires an eligible online subscription or product key. These are the terms stated for Visual Studio 2022 in that guidance; check the current terms for other versions rather than assuming the same trial applies. Subscription assigned by an organization or subscription administrator
- Open Visual Studio and sign in using the account to which the subscription was assigned.
- Allow the IDE to verify the active subscription. The edition available is controlled by the subscription entitlement.
- Check the subscription portal if you need to confirm the subscription or edition associated with your account.

Retail subscription
- Open the activation link in the Microsoft Store purchase confirmation page or email.
- Sign in with the Microsoft or work/school account that should receive subscription access.
- Enter the subscription’s 5×5 product key and complete the activation flow.
This key activates the retail subscription benefit; it is not an IDE product key to enter in Visual Studio’s installation workflow. If you need to activate Windows, Office, another eligible Microsoft product, or an earlier Visual Studio version obtained through a subscription, sign in to the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal and look for its available product keys. - Confirm the account: Sign out and use the exact account to which the subscription was assigned. A different personal or work/school account may not have the entitlement.
- Check the subscription and edition: Review the subscription portal to confirm the subscription is active and includes the edition you are trying to use. A Professional subscription does not grant Enterprise access.
- Ask the organization administrator: For an organization-provided subscription, ask the administrator to verify assignment and download permissions.
- For a retail purchase, complete its separate activation: Check the purchase confirmation for the 5×5 key and follow the retail activation flow. Use subscription support for subscription activation or renewal issues, and Microsoft Store support if the confirmation or key is missing.
