If your phone’s Wi-Fi keeps turning off, first check whether the Wi-Fi control actually switches off. A phone that stays connected to Wi-Fi but cannot load websites has a different problem, and a phone that drops one saved network may need a different fix again. Identify which symptom you have, then use the checks below to narrow it down safely.
Identify what is actually happening
When “phone WiFi keeps turning off” describes your problem, look at the Wi-Fi control and the connection indicator as the failure occurs. On iPhone, check Settings > Wi-Fi; on Android, open the Internet or Wi-Fi controls. Labels and paths vary across Android devices.
- The Wi-Fi control is off: The phone’s Wi-Fi setting is switching off. Start with the phone checks below.
- Wi-Fi is on, but the phone disconnects from a saved network: Check the saved network, signal, and router.
- The phone says it is connected, but the internet does not work: Investigate the network or internet connection. This is not the same as Wi-Fi turning off.
Try safe checks on the phone
Restart and check basic controls
- Restart the phone.
- Confirm Wi-Fi is on and Airplane Mode is off.
- If the Wi-Fi control itself keeps switching off, check whether a device setting, management policy, or security app could be controlling it. Android menus and options vary by manufacturer; consult your phone maker’s instructions for the exact setting names.
Android includes an option to turn Wi-Fi on near saved networks, but its location and labels can vary. Google’s Android instructions for connecting to Wi-Fi describe the Internet panel and note that steps differ by device. Google also documents resetting an internet connection there; doing so during a phone or video call ends that call.
If you have an iPhone
Check Wi-Fi and Airplane Mode in Settings. If Wi-Fi is dimmed and cannot be turned on, restart the iPhone. Apple also recommends checking Connectivity Assist and temporarily considering whether VPN or security software is affecting the connection. Follow Apple’s iPhone and iPad Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps.

If the problem is a particular saved network, choose between two options:
- Turn off Auto-Join: The network remains saved, including its password, but the iPhone will not join it automatically.
- Forget This Network: The network and its saved password are removed from the iPhone. You will need the password to reconnect. If your devices use the same Apple Account with iCloud Keychain, forgetting the network can affect those other devices too. Apple explains these options in its saved Wi-Fi network guidance.
Use two tests to isolate the network
Compare the affected phone with another device on the same Wi-Fi, then try the phone on a different Wi-Fi network. These comparisons help distinguish a phone-specific problem from a network problem.

| The phone fails on multiple Wi-Fi networks. | A phone-specific issue that may need support. | Continue with the relevant phone checks; if an iPhone cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network, Apple advises contacting Apple Support. |
| The phone and other devices show Wi-Fi connected but cannot access the internet. | An internet or router issue rather than the Wi-Fi control switching off. | Check the router and internet service, and contact the network host or provider if needed. |
Check the router when multiple devices have trouble
If the problem is limited to a home network, move closer to the router and, where available, test another supported frequency. Check for router firmware updates and follow the router manual when restarting it. Google describes a common restart: unplug the router, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for its lights to return. If multiple devices still have trouble, contact your internet provider or the person who manages the network.

Apple Support says, “Reset network settings only if other solutions fail,” in its iPhone and iPad Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance. On iPhone, this reset removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets mobile, VPN, and APN settings. Make sure you have the network credentials and any needed configuration first; if the phone is managed by an organization, check with its administrator before resetting.

If the Wi-Fi control itself repeatedly switches off after basic checks, consult the phone manufacturer’s support for your model. If an iPhone cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network, Apple’s recommended next step is Apple Support; that is an escalation point, not proof of hardware failure.
