Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteInstall X.Org and Xwayland security fixes through your Linux distribution, then follow the update notice for your exact release and package. Do not assume every X.Org update requires a full reboot: Ubuntu’s USN-7846-1 instructed affected users to reboot, but that instruction is specific to that notice.
Where do I get X.Org security patches?
Use your operating system’s supported package manager or update service. The X.Org Project provides source releases, not binaries, and says users should obtain X binaries from their operating system or distribution: X.Org FAQ.
Avoid replacing distribution-managed X.Org files with an upstream source build just to apply a security fix. Your distribution’s package may include its own versioning and integration, so use its security notice and supported update mechanism.
How do I know if my X.Org version is affected?
Check both the upstream advisory and the security notice for your distribution and release. The X.Org security page explains upstream affected components and fixed upstream releases; the distribution notice tells you which packages and supported releases receive its fix.

X.Org components are released separately rather than as one unified X Window System release. An advisory may concern xorg-server, Xwayland, libXfont2, libXpm, or another module, so first identify the component named in the notice. Also check whether you use Xorg directly or Xwayland within a Wayland session; either can be relevant.
At the time of the X.Org security index checked on October 7, 2026, its July 8, 2026 advisories listed fixes for X server issues in xorg-server 21.1.24 and Xwayland 24.1.13; the index also listed July 2026 libXfont2 fixes at 2.0.8. These are upstream fixed-version statements, not universal package requirements. The index says advisories are organized by the most recent release they affect, and issues can also affect older releases. Read the affected-version scope in the relevant advisory rather than assuming an older branch is safe or that your distribution must use the same version string.

Why your distribution’s version string may differ
Distributions can backport security fixes to packages for supported releases without adopting the upstream version number. Ubuntu documents this approach in its security notices. For Ubuntu, use the notice matching your release and package; for another distribution, consult its own advisory and support information rather than assuming Ubuntu’s packaging practice applies.
Do I need to reboot after an X.Org security update?
Follow the completion instructions in the security notice for the package you installed. There is no universal rule established here that every X.Org patch requires a full-machine reboot.

For a specific example, Canonical’s Ubuntu USN-7846-1, published October 29, 2025 and covering xorg-server and xwayland, says: “After a standard system update you need to reboot your computer to make all the necessary changes.” See the USN-7846-1 notice. That is Ubuntu’s instruction for that notice, not a blanket instruction for other distributions or every X.Org update.
Ubuntu’s Livepatch reboot guidance also says live kernel patching does not eliminate reboot requirements when upgrading to a newer kernel, and advises following reboot guidance when a software component requires it. This is general Ubuntu guidance; it does not establish that X.Org itself always requires a reboot.

How to apply and verify the update
- Identify your system and session. Note your distribution and release, and whether the graphical session uses Xorg directly or Xwayland under Wayland.
- Find the matching notices. Use the X.Org advisory to check the upstream issue and component, then find your distribution’s notice for the same component or CVE and your exact release.
- Install through the supported update mechanism. Use your distribution’s normal package manager or update service rather than manually replacing managed files with an upstream tarball.
- Complete the notice’s required action. Reboot if the notice says to reboot; restart a service or session if it calls for that instead. Do not infer a restart requirement from a notice for a different package or distribution.
- Check status and support coverage. Confirm the installed package is the fixed package identified for your release, and verify that the release and package component still receive security maintenance.
What should I do if X stops working after an update?
Start with the distribution’s support material, especially if you use a distribution-built X server. The X.Org FAQ identifies /var/log/Xorg.0.log as the usual X server log; it may help show why the server failed to start. The file may not apply to every setup, particularly when the issue is in an Xwayland session or the distribution uses different logging.
- Check the distribution’s update notice for any required reboot or service/session restart that remains incomplete.
- Review the relevant X server log where available, along with your distribution’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Use the distribution’s support channel for package-specific recovery advice rather than installing upstream files over distribution-managed packages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my Linux distribution backport X.Org security fixes?
Ubuntu documents security fixes backported to supported releases, so its package version may not match the upstream fixed version. For other distributions, check their own notices; Ubuntu’s practice does not establish how another vendor packages fixes.

Should I compare my installed package version directly with the upstream fixed version?
Not by itself. A distribution may backport a fix while keeping a different package version string. Check the notice for your exact distribution release and package.
