X.Org Server is the server implementation for the X11 display system. In a traditional Xorg session, it coordinates X11 applications’ access to display and input hardware. In a Wayland session, Xwayland can provide an X11-compatible server for applications that still use X11. That is why a Linux desktop can run Wayland and still use software from the X.Org server project.
What does X.Org Server do?
X.Org Server implements the server side of the X11 client/server system. Applications—called clients in this model—send requests to the server and receive events from it. The server coordinates their shared access to resources such as the display, keyboard and pointer. The X.Org developer guide describes the X server as the process that provides hardware-device services to client applications.
X.Org Server is not a desktop environment, window manager, application toolkit or graphics driver. These are separate components that can work with an X11 session. Applications commonly use toolkits such as GTK or Qt; developers who need lower-level X11 access can use XCB. Xlib remains widely used, though the X.Org documentation does not recommend it for new development. See the X.Org developer guide.
Why is X.Org code still used on Linux desktops?
Some sessions use X.Org Server as their main display server
In a native Xorg session, X.Org Server provides the central X11 server. An X11 window manager and other desktop components work alongside it. The upstream X.Org release directory lists Xorg Server 21.1.23, with release files dated 2026-06-02. That confirms an upstream release, but does not show which distributions offer or support a full Xorg session.

Wayland sessions use Xwayland for X11 compatibility
A Wayland desktop can run native Wayland applications directly through its compositor while also supporting X11 applications through Xwayland. Xwayland is an X11 server in the X.Org server source repository, but it runs as a client of the Wayland compositor. An X11 application connects to Xwayland as it would to an X server; Xwayland then works with the compositor to present the application’s window.
The Wayland documentation describes Xwayland as the compatibility path for X11 clients. Its presence does not mean the whole desktop is running an Xorg session: the compositor remains the main display server in a Wayland session.

Xorg session vs. Wayland with Xwayland
| Question | Native Xorg session | Wayland session with Xwayland |
|---|---|---|
| Main display server | X.Org Server | The Wayland compositor |
| How an X11 application connects | Directly to the X server | To Xwayland, which is an X11 server and a Wayland client |
| Where window management happens | In the session’s X11 window manager and desktop components | In the Wayland compositor, which integrates Xwayland windows |
| Hardware path | X.Org Server uses the applicable Xorg display and input stack | Xwayland uses Wayland for input and output; its documentation says Xorg’s xf86-video and xf86-input modules are not used |
| Compatibility | Native X11 server behavior | Broad X11 application compatibility, but not complete parity with a native X server |
| Communication between X11 clients | X11 clients share an X server and can communicate through it | Clients sharing one Xwayland instance can communicate with one another unless the compositor uses separate application-specific instances |
The architectural details in this comparison are described in the Wayland documentation, the Xwayland section, and the Xwayland isolation section.
What are Xwayland’s compatibility limits?
In rootless mode, Xwayland can present X11 windows as individual windows alongside native Wayland windows, rather than placing them inside one large X11 window. The Wayland compositor’s X11 window-management component handles those X11 windows. This bridge makes a mixed desktop possible, but it does not reproduce every feature of a native X server.

- Live Boot: Simply plug the USB drive into your computer, select the USB drive as your boot device, and experience Linux Mint without installation. This allows you to test the OS and its features before making any changes to your system.
- Install Option: Once you've tested and decided to keep Linux Mint, you can easily install it on your computer directly from the USB drive.
- Pre-installed software like LibreOffice for office tasks, a capable web browser (Firefox), email client (Thunderbird), and multimedia tools. This minimizes the need for additional downloads, saving you time and effort.
- Resource Efficiency: Designed to run efficiently on a variety of hardware configurations. It demands fewer system resources compared to some other operating systems, making it an excellent choice for older computers or devices with limited hardware specifications.
- Compatible with PC/Laptop/Desktop brands - Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba & more. Minimum system requirements 4 GB RAM Dual-Core Processor (2 GHz) 20 GB of free disk space
In particular, an independent X11 window manager or a full X11 desktop environment generally cannot take over window management in the usual way for integrated Xwayland windows: the Wayland compositor must retain that role. The Xwayland documentation discusses these compatibility constraints.
There is also an isolation boundary to understand. X11 clients using the same Xwayland instance can communicate with one another through that server. A compositor can reduce that exposure by starting separate, application-specific Xwayland instances, but that is not automatic. The documented model isolates X11 clients from Wayland clients; it should not be read as a guarantee that every application is isolated from every other application. See the Wayland documentation on Xwayland isolation.

Is X.Org Server still maintained?
The X.Org release directory lists Xorg Server 21.1.23 and Xwayland 24.1.12, with release files dated 2026-06-02. These upstream releases establish recent project activity as of that date. They do not establish a security-support guarantee, a release cadence, or the maintenance policy for any particular Linux distribution. For distribution-specific availability and support, consult that distribution’s own current release and support documentation.
X.Org’s stable-branch documentation describes a process for maintaining branches and accepting fixes. It is a process document, not evidence of a current schedule for a specific release.

Not necessarily as the main display server. A Wayland session uses its compositor for that role. But it may still run Xwayland when an application needs an X11 server interface. The Wayland project describes Xwayland as the compatibility mechanism that lets X11 and native Wayland applications appear in the same desktop.
How much X.Org software a particular desktop uses depends on its session and applications. The official sources establish the roles of Xorg and Xwayland, but do not quantify how many people still choose full Xorg sessions or establish which distributions currently maintain them.
