Wayland’s compositor-centered design changes how input and display access are mediated, while X.Org Server provides the long-established X11 server model. Xwayland lets many X11 applications run inside Wayland sessions, but it does not make every X11 feature or desktop component compatible. For performance, architecture alone cannot establish which session will be faster on your hardware and workload.
First, what are you comparing?
X.Org Server and Wayland are not equivalent implementations of the same component. X.Org Server implements the server role in the X Window System (X11). Wayland is a protocol: a Wayland compositor implements the display-server role and also handles compositing and window management. The distinction matters because behavior in a Wayland session depends on the specific compositor, its configuration, drivers, and applications—not on a single universal “Wayland desktop.” See the X New Developer’s Guide and the Wayland project’s architecture overview.

Security: Wayland narrows some client access, but neither choice guarantees a secure system
In the X model, clients communicate with a shared server that handles input and window events. X.Org documents access controls including host-based authentication and MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1, as well as the SECURITY extension’s trusted and untrusted client model. The same documentation describes significant limits: extension protection is incomplete, setting up untrusted clients is cumbersome, and some features have not been used. That mechanisms reference was last edited in 2013, so it describes documented X security architecture, not a complete audit of every current desktop deployment. See X.Org’s security documentation.
Wayland puts focus and input delivery under compositor control. Its protocol model does not let ordinary clients request explicit input grabs in the X sense, reducing the kinds of cross-client input observation they can request. That is a meaningful boundary change, not a promise that every application or the whole computer is secure: the compositor, privileged components, desktop portals, and application-specific permissions still matter. Xwayland adds an important qualification. X11 applications in a shared Xwayland instance are not isolated from one another by default, although the Wayland documentation says X11 clients are naturally isolated from native Wayland clients. A compositor can choose to run application-specific Xwayland instances, but that is not the default shared-instance arrangement. See X11 Application Support — Xwayland.
Check the security status of the installed packages
Security maintenance is version- and distribution-specific. The X.Org advisory list recorded, on July 8, 2026, issues affecting X.Org X server versions before 21.1.24 and Xwayland versions before 24.1.13, with fixes in those respective versions. Those are upstream thresholds; distributions may backport fixes without using the same upstream version string. Check your distribution’s package security notices and installed package status rather than applying upstream version comparisons blindly. The advisory list is at X.Org Development/Security.

Compatibility: Xwayland covers many X11 apps, not every X11 workflow
A native Wayland application speaks the Wayland protocol to the compositor. An X11 application running in a Wayland session usually talks to Xwayland, an X11 server that itself acts as a Wayland client. In rootless mode, Xwayland can present individual X11 windows alongside native windows, allowing many existing applications to remain usable without running a full X.Org desktop session.
Compatibility is not complete. The Wayland documentation says it is unlikely to reach 100%, and notes that X11 window managers and some desktop-environment components are practically never supported in the ordinary integrated arrangement. An application may open successfully while a surrounding workflow—window management, automation, capture, or desktop integration—still behaves differently. Upstream documentation explains the general limits but cannot establish whether a particular application works correctly in a particular distribution release and compositor.

Test the workflows you rely on
- List must-have applications, especially older window managers, panels, screen-capture and input-automation tools, and software that depends on global shortcuts or other X11-specific behavior.
- Try each application in the actual compositor and distribution release you plan to use. Distinguish native Wayland operation from operation through Xwayland when checking an application’s status.
- Test the complete task, not just launch: for example, whether a capture tool can select the intended window, or whether a shortcut works while another application is focused.
- If you need X11-specific desktop components or depend on behavior that fails under Xwayland, an X.Org session may remain the more compatible choice for that workflow.
The session selector is commonly available from the login screen, but its label and location vary by display manager and distribution. Choose the relevant X11 or Wayland session there when both are installed; do not assume every distribution offers both.
Performance: compare the session and workload, not the names
Wayland’s architecture can remove intermediary roles from parts of the input and display path, but that is not a benchmark result. X.Org’s performance notes emphasize that performance is difficult to quantify and discuss transport latency and asynchronous XCB as factors in X applications. These observations do not establish a current, controlled winner across representative compositors, drivers, hardware, and workloads. Do not infer that an application is slow or incompatible merely because it uses Xlib: X.Org says Xlib remains widely used, though it is not recommended for new low-level development, and describes XCB as a more modern low-level binding. API age by itself does not demonstrate a performance outcome. The X.Org documentation index covers both libraries.
Make a fair comparison on your own setup
If performance matters, compare the actual sessions you can run and keep the conditions consistent. Record:

- Compositor and version, GPU, driver, display resolution and refresh rate.
- Whether the tested application is native Wayland or running through Xwayland.
- Scaling and multi-monitor configuration.
- The workload: ordinary desktop interaction, gaming, video, or remote display can stress different parts of the stack.
- How frame pacing and latency are measured, and power use if it matters to you.
Without comparable measurements under those conditions, a claim that one architecture is simply faster is not supported. Results for a particular application or desktop setup may not transfer to another.

- Choose Wayland when your essential applications and desktop tools work in the target compositor, and its input and display model fits your needs.
- Choose X.Org when a required X11 application, window manager, or desktop workflow does not work adequately through Xwayland and an X11 session is available.
- Choose by measured results when responsiveness, gaming, video, remote display, or battery use is the deciding factor. Test the exact hardware, applications, and configuration you will use.
Both options have security maintenance needs. Check the installed distribution packages and notices regardless of which session you choose; a Wayland session can still include Xwayland for legacy applications.
