An “exchange deposit” is a transfer an exchange is expecting to credit to your customer account; a “wallet transfer” describes sending crypto to a wallet address. They are not different kinds of blockchain transaction. To tell which one you made, check where you got the destination details, then compare the asset, network, address and any required memo or tag with the receiving service’s instructions.
What the difference means
The blockchain records a transfer between addresses. “Deposit” describes what the receiving exchange does with an incoming transfer: it identifies the deposit and, after its processing requirements are met, credits the funds to an internal customer balance. OKX defines a deposit as “transferring crypto from another exchange or platform to your OKX account.” Kraken likewise explains that a deposit appears in an account after the required blockchain confirmations. The word “deposit” does not identify a special transaction type on the blockchain.
A wallet transfer describes sending crypto to a wallet address. With a self-custody wallet, the owner controls the keys. With a custodial exchange, the exchange operates the destination wallet infrastructure and associates incoming funds with a customer account. For definitions and platform-specific examples, see the [OKX Help Center](s_okx), [Coinbase Help](s_coinbase), and [Kraken Support](s_kraken).
How to tell where a transfer was meant to go
| What to check | Exchange deposit | Self-custody wallet transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the destination | The exchange operates the receiving infrastructure and credits a customer balance. | The wallet owner controls the keys for the destination. |
| Where the destination details came from | Usually the receiving exchange’s deposit page, after selecting an asset and network. | Usually the wallet’s receive screen. |
| Memo or destination tag | May be required for particular assets and platforms to route funds to the right account. | Generally not needed for a unique self-custody address, but check the wallet and network instructions. |
| What a blockchain confirmation establishes | That the transaction has reached the relevant on-chain confirmation state; it does not alone establish that the exchange credited the account. | That the transaction has reached the relevant on-chain confirmation state; it does not establish how a custodial service would account for it. |
| Customer balance | The exchange must complete its separate crediting process. | The assets are associated with the wallet address, subject to the wallet and network’s rules. |
An address alone may not tell you who controls it. Start with the record of how you obtained it: the exchange deposit page, wallet receive screen, or saved account instructions. Kraken, OKX, Binance.US, and Exodus each provide service-specific deposit or receiving guidance; their instructions apply to their own services, not every destination.

Check the transfer details before deciding it was deposited
- Open the receiving service’s original instructions. If you intended to deposit to an exchange, go to that account’s deposit page and select the asset. Compare its displayed destination details with the address used in the transaction. If you intended to receive into self-custody, compare with the wallet’s receive screen or the wallet’s address record. Do not infer ownership from the address alone.
- Match the asset and network separately. A token may be available on more than one network, while a receiving service may support only certain combinations. Confirm that both the asset and the network used for the transfer match the current instructions for that exact destination. Sending an unsupported asset or using an unsupported network may make the funds unrecoverable. See the current guidance from Kraken, OKX, and Binance.US.
- Check whether a memo or destination tag was required. Some exchange deposits use a shared on-chain address for certain assets; a memo or tag helps route the transfer to the correct customer account. Requirements depend on the asset and destination platform. Coinbase’s help page lists examples including XRP, XLM, ATOM, and HBAR, but that list is Coinbase-specific, not a universal list of tagged assets. Coinbase says: “This extra field allows exchanges like Coinbase to route deposits from one shared address to the correct customer account, and is required for all deposits of these crypto assets to Coinbase.” Check the receiving platform’s current instructions each time. See Coinbase Help, Kraken Support, and Exodus Knowledge Base.
- Use a small test transfer when appropriate. For a new destination, network, or tag requirement, a small test can help catch an entry mistake before sending more. It cannot make an unsupported asset or network recoverable, and it does not replace checking the service’s instructions.
Why a confirmed transfer may not appear in an exchange account
A blockchain explorer and an exchange account show different checkpoints. Look up the transaction ID (TxID) in the explorer for the network used. Confirmations show the transaction’s on-chain status; the exchange may still be waiting for its own required number of confirmations or applying deposit processing rules. Kraken puts it this way: “After sending the crypto, your deposit will appear in your Kraken account once the required confirmations are completed on the blockchain.” Confirmation requirements and processing rules vary by platform, asset, network, and account circumstances, so there is no universal confirmation count or arrival time.
An on-chain transfer can therefore be successful while the exchange credit remains pending, absent, or under review. Check the transaction record and the receiving platform’s deposit status rather than treating “confirmed” in an explorer as proof of an account credit. See Kraken Support, OKX Help Center, and Binance.US Help Center.

What to do if the exchange has not credited the deposit
- Compare the transaction record with the receiving exchange’s deposit record: asset, network, destination address, and any memo or tag.
- Check the explorer’s TxID and the exchange’s current deposit status, including any stated minimum-deposit or confirmation requirements.
- If the details match but the account is still not credited, contact the receiving platform through its official support flow and provide the TxID and requested deposit details. Do not share a private key or recovery phrase.
Recovery is not guaranteed, especially when the asset, network, or required routing information does not match the destination’s instructions. The exchange’s support team is the appropriate route to ask whether a particular transfer can be handled.
