Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep plaintext credentials out of an AI agent’s prompts, memory, and logs. Give each agent a separate identity, grant it only task-specific access for a limited time, and let it retrieve credentials at runtime from a central secret manager or a workload-identity flow. Then restrict the tools and systems it can reach: a vault can protect credentials at rest, but it cannot stop an authorized agent from misusing a credential it can access.
Why AI agents need tighter secret controls
An agent may read private data, encounter untrusted content, and take actions through tools or external services. A web page, issue, retrieved document, tool description, or tool response can contain instructions intended to change its behavior. If the agent can access a credential—or its prompts and responses are recorded—prompt injection or a compromised integration can turn that access into disclosure or misuse. OWASP describes these risks in its AI Agent and MCP Security guidance and MCP token-mismanagement guidance.
OWASP flags hard-coded credentials, secret-bearing conversational memory, raw prompts or responses in logs and telemetry, tokens that outlast a session, and shared static service accounts. Its recommended safeguards include short-lived, scoped tokens; binding tokens to the agent, tool, or session; isolating context; protecting traces; redacting logs; and rotating credentials promptly after suspected exposure.
Build the access pattern around identity and runtime retrieval
Assign each agent its own identity
Use a service identity for each agent or independently managed agent workload rather than a developer’s personal credentials or a shared account. Separate identities make activity attributable and allow you to revoke one agent without disrupting unrelated workloads. Keep agent identities out of administrative roles, and distinguish read-only access from write-capable permissions.

Grant only the access a task needs
Scope access to the required resources and actions, and prefer credentials that expire after a task or session. Use workload identity or OIDC where supported, and dynamically generated credentials when the service can issue them. Avoid long-lived production credentials in prompts, agent environments, and configuration files. OWASP summarizes the principle as “least agency”: give an agent only the autonomy, tools, and access its task requires, for only as long as it needs them.
Retrieve secrets at runtime without exposing their values
Store secret material in a dedicated manager with access controls and audit logging. Have the agent’s runtime authenticate using its workload identity and retrieve only the secret it needs. Runtime retrieval avoids embedding credentials in source code or container images. When possible, keep the secret inside a trusted tool or execution boundary that authenticates the downstream request itself, rather than returning the raw value to the model.

Do not treat an environment variable as safe merely because it is not in the prompt. Shell history, .env files, tool output, context memory, logs, and traces can all become disclosure paths. OWASP’s Secrets Management Cheat Sheet and AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet cover secret handling and agent controls.
Choose the right implementation pattern
| Pattern | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud-native secret manager with workload identity | The agent runs in a cloud environment where it can assume a scoped workload role. | Secret-level resource scope, rotation support, audit coverage, identity boundaries, and regional or service constraints. OWASP names AWS Secrets Manager, Azure Key Vault, and Google Cloud Secret Manager as examples of cloud secret stores. |
| Dedicated secrets platform, such as Vault | You need a central control plane across environments, dynamic credentials, or policy-based access spanning systems. | Operational ownership, deployment model, edition requirements, integration with the agent’s identity issuer, audit and rotation setup, and total cost. HashiCorp documents Vault agentic IAM and an MCP server; the cited agentic IAM capabilities require Vault Enterprise 2.1.0 or later. |
| OIDC or workload identity federation | A CI system or supported runtime can establish a trust relationship and exchange a short-lived identity token for scoped cloud access. | Issuer and audience validation, trusted workload attributes, role conditions, token lifetime, and downstream support for federation. OWASP gives GitHub Actions OIDC as a way to avoid stored AWS access keys, and also names workload identity federation for GCP and federated credentials for Azure. |
| Dynamic credentials | The secret system can generate temporary database, cloud, or certificate credentials for a task. | TTL, automatic revocation, renewal behavior, permission scope, and what happens when a task exceeds its lease. OWASP describes credentials that expire automatically; HashiCorp documents dynamically generated AWS credentials and workload identity federation. |
These patterns are complementary, not interchangeable. A cloud secret manager can be a good fit inside one cloud; federation can remove the need to store static keys; dynamic credentials can limit how long a credential remains useful; and a dedicated platform can centralize control across environments. Compare options on identity integration, secret-level scope, credential lifetime and rotation, audit and redaction controls, execution isolation, deployment complexity, and operating cost. The cited guidance does not establish an independent head-to-head price or feature benchmark.

Constrain what the agent can do with credentials
Secret access and action authority are separate controls. An agent that can retrieve a credential may still be able to misuse it unless the surrounding execution environment limits its reach. Apply deny-by-default tool policies and per-tool, per-resource scopes. Require approval for sensitive operations, run agents in a sandbox, and restrict network egress so a credential or sensitive result cannot be freely sent elsewhere. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet addresses these execution safeguards.
Make access auditable and prepare for exposure
Record which principal accessed each secret and monitor use for unexpected access. Redact secret values before prompts, tool responses, logs, traces, or telemetry are stored; protect retained traces from unauthorized access. Define a response path that lets the team invalidate or rotate credentials immediately after suspected disclosure, then investigate the affected identity and activity. OWASP’s Secrets Management Cheat Sheet and MCP token guidance cover lifecycle and exposure controls.

AWS-specific implementation example
AWS Prescriptive Guidance separates three relationships: the user invoking an agent, the agent accessing tools and resources, and tools accessing downstream systems. For an AWS deployment, it recommends least-privilege IAM roles for agents, AWS Secrets Manager for client IDs and secrets rather than code or environment variables, OAuth scopes to limit tool invocation, and IAM policies scoped to each tool’s required permissions. It also recommends monitoring with CloudTrail and CloudWatch. These are AWS-specific recommendations, not a universal architecture; see AWS Prescriptive Guidance: Secure access and implementation of generative AI agents.

Evaluation checklist for a vault or cloud secret manager
- Can each agent authenticate with its own workload identity, without a shared static service account?
- Can policies limit access to individual secrets, resources, and actions?
- Can credentials be short-lived, dynamically generated, rotated, and revoked?
- Are access events auditable, and can logs and traces be redacted before storage?
- Can the agent’s tools, filesystem, and network access be constrained independently of secret retrieval?
- Does the service fit your deployment model and identity issuer, and are the necessary features available in your chosen edition?
- Is there a tested process to invalidate credentials and investigate activity after suspected exposure?
