Kindle firmware 5.20.1 is listed for several recent Kindle and Scribe models. Its most notable reported additions are Scribe voice dictation and handwritten sticky notes for fixed-layout books and documents. Those feature details come from an independent report reproducing Amazon release-note text; the Amazon notes page available for checking still showed older entries. Kindle Click, Amazon’s new page-turn remote, is a separate accessory—not a feature shown to have been added by update 5.20.1.
What’s new in Kindle update 5.20.1?
The reported changes focus on Kindle Scribe. The eBook Reader Blog reproduces Amazon’s Scribe 5.20.1 notes describing two additions: microphone-based dictation and handwritten sticky notes for fixed-layout content. Because Amazon’s release-note page showed older entries when checked, treat those details as reported release-note text rather than independently confirmed on the live Amazon notes page. The eBook Reader Blog’s report has the reproduced feature descriptions.
Voice dictation on supported Scribes
According to the report, dictation lets you speak text into Search, book and document annotations, and notebook names. It requires a microphone. The report says the 2022 and 2024 Scribe models do not have one, so this capability is limited to newer Scribe models with a microphone.
Handwritten sticky notes for fixed-layout content
The reproduced note says: “You can now add handwritten sticky notes in fixed layout eBooks or personal documents.” The reported options are the writing toolbar or the text-selection action menu. The stated scope is fixed-layout eBooks and personal documents; it does not establish that sticky notes work in every standard reflowable Kindle book.

Is Kindle Click part of update 5.20.1?
No evidence in Amazon’s announcement connects Kindle Click to firmware 5.20.1. Amazon introduced it as a separate Bluetooth page-turn remote in its 2026 Kindle lineup announcement. The remote is for turning pages; it is distinct from the reported Scribe software features.

How it differs from the Page-Turn Cover
Amazon also announced a $79.99 Page-Turn Cover with physical page-turn buttons. The announcement lists it for Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition, not as a general Kindle accessory. Choose between a separate Bluetooth remote and a fitted cover based on your model and whether you want the buttons on a separate accessory or attached case.

How to check your Kindle’s software version
- On your Kindle, open Settings.
- Open the device information or software update area and note the model and installed software version. Menu wording can vary by model.
- Compare your exact model with Amazon’s software update list. The page currently lists different versions for some older generations.
If your model is listed but the update is not yet installed, consult Amazon’s model-specific instructions on that page rather than installing a file intended for another Kindle.

The available model list establishes that 5.20.1 is listed for selected devices, but the sources here do not provide a complete, verified comparison between 5.20.1 and 5.19.6 across Kindle models. The specific change details described above are Scribe-focused and come from the independent report reproducing release-note text; they should not be treated as a full changelog for every device on 5.20.1.
