A self-emptying robot vacuum transfers debris from its onboard bin into a larger container or bag in its dock. That means less frequent hand-emptying of the robot—not a maintenance-free cleaner. The right choice depends on your floors, hair and debris, clutter, rugs, clearances, thresholds, and how much dock upkeep you are willing to do.

Start with your home, not the feature list

Before comparing models, note what the vacuum will need to handle. A high-priced robot is not automatically a better match for your rooms; the independent Vacuum Wars Robot Vacuum Buying Guide, updated September 30, 2026, advises: “The most important rule: Choose for the conditions in your home.”

  • Flooring: Estimate how much of your home is carpet, rugs, and hard flooring. Carpet and shedding pets make brush design and hair handling important; hard floors may make mopping and edge coverage higher priorities.
  • Hair and debris: Consider pet shedding, long human hair, and how often dirt accumulates. These affect brush upkeep and how quickly the dock fills.
  • Clutter: Think about cables, toys, shoes, and other objects left on the floor. Mapping a room does not necessarily mean a robot can identify and avoid items in its path.
  • Rugs and mixed flooring: If you want a model that mops, check whether its mop lifts or can be removed, and whether the robot detects carpet. Otherwise, a wet pad may cross a rug.
  • Physical fit: Measure low furniture and note thresholds between rooms. Compare those measurements with the robot’s published dimensions and manual.
  • Dock space: Check where the base will sit, including the room needed to access bags, bins, tanks, or trays for upkeep.

What self-emptying does—and does not do

After cleaning, the robot returns to its station, which transfers debris from the robot’s smaller onboard bin into a larger dock container or bag. This can reduce how often you empty the robot by hand. It does not mean the dock never needs attention: capacity, handling, and emptying frequency depend on the dock design and household conditions.

ECOVACS says its own robot-vacuum systems can hold 30–90 days of debris between dock emptyings, depending on household size and conditions. That is manufacturer guidance, not a category-wide guarantee. Its guidance also says to consider suction capacity, dustbin size, battery life, maintenance, and how long the robot takes to empty itself when comparing auto-empty models. Compare bagged and bagless docks

A bagged base collects debris in a replaceable bag; a bagless base uses a reusable container that you empty. Neither design makes the whole system maintenance-free, and brands do not all use the same setup.

Dock type What to check Trade-off
Bagged Replacement-bag cost, availability, and compatibility with the exact robot or station model. Collects debris in a disposable bag, but creates a recurring model-specific consumable need.
Bagless Container capacity, how it opens and empties, and how often it needs attention in your home. Avoids replacement bags, but the container still has to be emptied and handled.

For an example of brand-specific differences, Shark describes its own base as bagless, while eufy’s guide covers single-use bags for particular compatible models. These examples do not establish a universal design for either brand’s full range. If considering eufy bags, its compatibility guide says to match the full robot or station name to the listing; do not assume a similar-looking bag fits.

Separate navigation from obstacle avoidance

Navigation helps a robot map and cover rooms. Obstacle avoidance is about detecting and responding to objects in its path. A robot can map successfully yet still struggle with clutter. ECOVACS describes LiDAR, camera-based, and simpler bump-and-move navigation approaches, as well as cliff sensors and app no-go zones. The Vacuum Wars buying guide recommends considering dedicated obstacle avoidance for cluttered homes.

Compare the navigation method, room coverage, app controls for no-go zones, and obstacle-avoidance capability as separate specifications. Cliff sensors address a different risk—going over an edge—than avoiding objects such as cables or toys.

Decide whether mopping and an all-in-one dock are worth the trade-offs

Mop lifting or removal can matter in homes with both hard floors and rugs. A full-service dock may also wash or dry mop pads, reducing some hands-on work. Those features can increase purchase cost and dock size, and add tanks or trays that still require cleaning. Choose them for a cleaning task you actually want automated, rather than assuming more dock functions mean no upkeep.

Check fit, thresholds, and the exact model

A robot cannot clean under furniture it cannot enter or cross a threshold it cannot manage. Measure the lowest clearance along its route and compare it with the robot’s published height. Check threshold-crossing guidance in the specific model’s manual; do not infer capability from another model in the same brand’s range.

Before buying, confirm the full robot and dock model names, dimensions, consumable compatibility, and parts listing. Specifications and compatibility vary by model, and published dimensions or manuals should take precedence over assumptions based on product-family names.

Budget for ownership upkeep

Self-emptying mainly changes disposal of the robot’s collected debris. Filters, brushes, mop pads, tanks, and trays can still need cleaning or replacement. Use the exact model’s manual and parts listing for compatibility and intervals.

As an example—not a universal schedule—eufy’s 2026 accessory guidance suggests replacing filters every 2–3 months, the rolling brush about every 6 months, and mop pads every 3–6 months, with intervals depending on use and debris. Its guide also gives a typical dust-bag life of 30–75 days, depending on pets, carpet, and cleaning frequency. These are eufy product guidance figures, not expected lifetimes for every brand or household. Check eufy’s accessory schedule and the eufy bag compatibility guide for the relevant products.

Use a practical shortlist before you buy

  1. Write down your cleaning priorities: carpet, hard floors, pet hair, clutter, mopping, or a combination.
  2. Measure the route: Check low furniture, thresholds, and available dock space against the exact model’s dimensions and manual.
  3. Compare the dock: Identify whether it is bagged or bagless, how debris is handled, and what recurring parts it needs.
  4. Check navigation and avoidance separately: Confirm mapping and no-go-zone controls, then look for obstacle avoidance if floors are often cluttered.
  5. Review all upkeep: Confirm replacement-part compatibility and maintenance instructions for the specific robot and dock.
  6. Compare total fit, not one headline feature: A model is a good candidate only if its cleaning approach, dock, dimensions, and ongoing care suit your home.
