Choose a UPI app that supports your bank and the payments you make, then check how clearly it shows the recipient and amount, where to find account controls and help, and what its current privacy disclosures say. No independent, comparable security ranking is established for the apps covered here, so popularity, rewards, or an app’s own security claims are not proof that it is safest.
What to check before choosing a UPI app
UPI is an interoperable instant-payment system linked to bank accounts. The right app is one that works with your bank and makes your everyday tasks manageable; its name alone does not tell you how safe your payments will be.
- Bank compatibility: Confirm that the bank account you want to link is supported. For example, BHIM’s listing asks users to check whether their bank is live on BHIM. That is a compatibility check, not evidence that BHIM is safer than another app.
- Clear payment approval: Before authorizing a payment, make sure the app clearly shows the recipient and amount. The available official sources establish the role of PIN-based authorization, but do not provide comparative tests of apps’ confirmation screens.
- Useful features: Choose features you will actually use, such as QR payments, bill payments, or UPI Lite. BHIM’s listing advertises these functions; verify current availability and behavior in the app.
- Controls and support: Find the official help route and learn how to report a mistaken or suspicious transaction before you need it. Available sources do not compare the quality of support across providers.
- Privacy disclosures: Read the app’s current Google Play “Data safety” details and the provider’s terms. Google Play says disclosures are supplied by developers and may change, so they are useful information rather than an independent privacy audit.
- Genuine app and compatible device: Install the official app from the provider or its app-store listing, keep your operating system updated, and avoid using a compromised device. NPCI’s 2025 circular discusses device compatibility and security validations for additional authentication methods, including restrictions related to rooted or jail-broken devices and unsupported operating systems. Those requirements apply to the methods addressed in the circular; they should not be generalized to every app’s entire security design.
Understand what UPI safeguards do—and don’t do
UPI security is layered. Device binding, PIN authentication, transaction limits, use-case restrictions, and bank-side monitoring can help protect transactions. The Ministry of Finance said in an August 4, 2025 parliamentary reply that “NPCI also provides a fraud monitoring solution to all the banks to generate alerts and decline transactions using AI/ML-based models.” These safeguards do not prevent every scam, especially when someone persuades a user to approve a payment or share access.
Think of the UPI PIN as authorization to make a bank transaction, not as a password to disclose to another person. NPCI says bank customer support will not ask for your PIN. Never share it, an OTP, your account password, or remote access to your phone with someone claiming to be bank or app support.

Know when a QR code or PIN is a scam signal
You do not enter your UPI PIN to receive money. NPCI explicitly warns that “scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is only meant for making payments, not receiving them.” If someone tells you to scan a QR code or enter a PIN to collect funds, stop and verify the request independently.
Before approving a payment, check the recipient and amount displayed in the app. Do not approve an unexpected collect request or follow a caller’s instructions without independently verifying who they are. The Reserve Bank of India identifies vishing, phishing, misuse of collect requests, and remote access among reported fraud or attempted-fraud methods.

Decide whether UPI Lite fits your routine
UPI Lite is intended to simplify some small payments by allowing eligible transactions without PIN authentication. The RBI describes UPI Lite as introduced in September 2022, with payments up to ₹500 possible without a PIN; it also describes UPI Lite X for offline NFC payments and UPI Tap & Pay. These are convenience options, not reasons by themselves to regard an app as more secure.
In a BHIM listing updated October 2, 2026, the developer advertises PIN-less UPI Lite payments up to ₹500 and advises users to confirm their bank is live on BHIM. Treat that as a current developer listing statement, not an independent evaluation. Availability and operating limits can depend on the app, bank, and current NPCI instructions, so check those details before relying on a feature.

What the available fraud figures can tell you
An RBI publication reports that 94.5 per cent of surveyed users said they had not experienced digital-payment fraud. Among survey respondents who encountered fraud or attempted fraud, reported methods included vishing (54.2 per cent), phishing (37.2 per cent), misuse of collect requests (28.7 per cent), and remote access (25.5 per cent). The page reviewed does not identify a publication date. These are survey findings, not current incidence rates for UPI or comparisons of individual apps.

If you suspect a payment is fraudulent, your account is at risk, or you approved a payment by mistake, contact your bank promptly using its official contact route and use the app’s official support channel. Do not rely on a phone number or link provided by an unsolicited caller or message. Support and complaint procedures vary; the available sources do not establish one procedure shared by every UPI provider.
