If you already have IT support, systems, or networking experience and want broad security coverage, CompTIA Security+ may be a better fit. Neither credential is shown to guarantee a job; check current listings for your target role and location before paying for an exam.
Choose based on your experience and target role
| Your situation | Option to consider first | Why it may fit | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| No IT or security experience; wants a structured start | ISC2 CC | ISC2 explicitly presents CC as a starting point for newcomers and provides related learning and exam resources. | Current exam objectives, cost, eligibility, and available study resources in your location. |
| IT support, systems, or networking experience; wants broad security coverage | CompTIA Security+ | Its published objectives cover general security concepts, threats, architecture, operations, and security program management. | Whether relevant local job listings ask for Security+, another credential, a degree, or hands-on experience. |
| Already works in security operations or infrastructure administration | ISC2 SSCP | It focuses on operational security and has a one-year relevant-experience requirement for full certification. | Whether your experience is documentable and qualifies under an SSCP domain. |
| Several years in security or pursuing senior security leadership | ISC2 CISSP, later | Its experience and domain requirements make it an experienced-professional credential. | Current experience and endorsement requirements. |
| Building toward cloud security after gaining IT and cybersecurity experience | ISC2 CCSP, later | It is a cloud-security specialization with substantial experience requirements. | Current experience substitutions and whether it matches your intended cloud-security role. |
Use four checks to narrow the choice: your existing IT and security experience, the exam’s scope compared with the work you want, the exam and maintenance burden in your market, and whether the credential appears in current local job postings. Available official certification information supports comparing experience and scope, but does not establish local employer preferences or provide a location-specific comparison of costs.
Why CC is the clearest first certification for a beginner
ISC2 describes Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) as a starting point for people new to cybersecurity and offers related learning and exam resources. That makes it the most directly newcomer-oriented choice among the credentials covered here if you have no IT or security background.
This is a fit recommendation, not evidence that employers prefer CC over Security+ or that CC alone is enough to get hired. Use the certification to structure your learning, then compare what you have studied with the responsibilities and skills in entry-level listings near you.

When Security+ makes more sense
CompTIA Security+ is a broad foundational credential. Its SY0-701 objectives cover five domains: general security concepts; threats, vulnerabilities, and mitigations; security architecture; security operations; and security program management and oversight. CompTIA recommends at least two years of IT administration experience with a security focus, hands-on technical information-security experience, and broad security knowledge.
Those are CompTIA recommendations, not formal prerequisites in the exam material cited here. Being allowed to take an exam and being ready to learn its material efficiently are different things. If you are brand-new, you can still compare Security+ with CC, but do not treat the absence of a formal prerequisite as proof it is the easiest or most suitable first step.

What the SY0-701 exam covers
| Domain | Share of exam |
|---|---|
| General Security Concepts | 12% |
| Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations | 22% |
| Security Architecture | 18% |
| Security Operations | 28% |
| Security Program Management and Oversight | 20% |
CompTIA’s 2023 version 5.0 objectives state a maximum of 90 questions, including multiple-choice and performance-based question types, and a 90-minute exam. These figures describe the exam, not hiring outcomes. Review the current CompTIA Security+ certification information and its linked objectives before choosing study materials, since exam details can change.
Why SSCP, CISSP, and CCSP are usually not first steps
These ISC2 credentials have experience profiles that make them more appropriate for people already working in IT or security, or for a later specialization. A candidate may be able to pass an exam before meeting an experience requirement, but that does not make the full certification an entry-level credential.

SSCP: operational security with an experience threshold
SSCP covers practical security administration and operations, including access controls, risk monitoring and analysis, incident response and recovery, cryptography, network security, and systems and application security. ISC2 requires one year of relevant full-time experience in one or more domains for full certification; a qualifying degree may satisfy the requirement under ISC2 rules. A person who passes before meeting the experience requirement can become an Associate of ISC2 and gain the experience later. See ISC2’s SSCP experience requirements.
CISSP: for experienced security professionals
ISC2 requires at least five years of cumulative full-time experience across two or more of CISSP’s eight domains. A qualifying degree or approved credential may satisfy up to one year. Candidates who pass the exam but lack the required experience can become an Associate of ISC2 while they earn it. Review ISC2’s CISSP experience requirements before treating it as a near-term option.
CCSP: a later cloud-security specialization
CCSP is aimed at cloud security professionals. ISC2’s exam outline, effective August 1, 2026, sets an experience profile of five years of cumulative full-time IT experience, including three years in cybersecurity and one year in a CCSP domain, subject to specified substitutions. Candidates short of the experience requirement can become an Associate of ISC2 after passing and have a defined period to gain the experience. Check the current CCSP experience requirements and CCSP certification exam outline.
How to turn a certification choice into a job-search plan
- Pick a target role and location. Entry-level cybersecurity can mean different work, such as security operations or junior security administration. Search current postings in the place where you intend to work.
- Look for repeated requirements. Note the credentials employers name, but also record requests for IT experience, troubleshooting, networking, tools, or other practical skills. The official certification pages do not establish what employers in your market prefer.
- Match the credential to your starting point. Consider CC if you are new to the field; consider Security+ if you have foundational IT knowledge and want a broad security survey. Treat SSCP, CISSP, and CCSP according to their experience profiles rather than their titles alone.
- Check current exam details before spending money. Confirm objectives, eligibility, fees, and available learning resources with the certifying organization. The figures above are not a current price comparison.
- Build relevant experience alongside study. A help-desk or junior IT role can develop troubleshooting and systems knowledge that later supports security work. For a security operations path, relate your study to the tasks and skills appearing in target-role postings.
Will one certification get you an entry-level cybersecurity job?
The official materials described here explain what the certifications cover and what experience is required; they do not establish that passing any one exam causes a candidate to get hired. Treat a credential as evidence of structured learning, not a job guarantee. Evaluate it alongside the practical experience and skills requested in current local listings.
