Hydrogen provides more lift per envelope volume in NASA’s cited comparison, but it is flammable; helium provides slightly less lift and is nonflammable. For an RC airship, choose only a gas approved by the model’s documentation, then compare the actual net lift and locally quoted fill cost. Hydrogen’s lift advantage does not make it a safe or compatible choice by default.

Hydrogen vs. helium at a glance

Factor Hydrogen Helium
Lift in NASA’s standard-condition comparison 70 lbf per 1,000 ft³ (NASA, “Airships 101: Rediscovering the”) 65 lbf per 1,000 ft³, about 93% of hydrogen’s reported lift (NASA, “Airships 101: Rediscovering the”)
Key safety distinction Flammable in air; ignition and accumulation are central handling concerns (NASA Scientific Ballooning Handbook) Nonflammable; avoids hydrogen’s ignition hazard
Cost evidence Described as less expensive and more readily available in a specific NASA high-altitude airship concept study from 2007; not a current consumer quote No current RC-specific price established; obtain a local delivered quote
Model compatibility Check the model’s manual or applicable approval documentation. No general RC-airship approval or cylinder compatibility is established here.

The lift figures are general comparison values, not a performance promise for a particular model. The NASA presentation expresses usable lift as displaced-air lift minus dead weight: Useable Lift = Vol × (ρair − ρgas) × g − Wdead. A lightweight envelope can still have little payload capacity once the gondola, motors, battery, controls, and payload are included. NASA, “Airships 101: Rediscovering the”.

Which gas gives an RC airship more lift?

Hydrogen has the higher lift per volume in the cited NASA comparison: 70 lbf per 1,000 ft³, versus helium’s 65 lbf per 1,000 ft³. NASA describes helium’s value as about 93% of hydrogen’s. That is a modest relative difference, not a substitute for calculating the lift of your actual envelope at its operating conditions.

To estimate whether a model will fly, start with envelope volume and the selected gas’s lift under the relevant conditions, then subtract all dead weight. Include envelope material, seams and valves, gondola, motors, battery, receiver, wiring, landing gear, and the intended payload. Add margin for leakage and real-world conditions rather than treating the presentation’s standard-condition figures as a guaranteed lift rating.

Which gas is safer for a model blimp?

Helium avoids hydrogen’s ignition hazard

Helium is nonflammable, which removes the specific fire and ignition concern associated with hydrogen. It is therefore the simpler choice where the model’s approved configuration and available supply permit its use.

Hydrogen requires serious fire precautions

NASA’s Scientific Ballooning Handbook reports that hydrogen in air is flammable across a range of 4–74% by volume. It gives a minimum ignition energy of 0.02 mJ at 30% hydrogen by volume and notes that a spark too small to see can be sufficient at that concentration. The handbook emphasizes preventing gas accumulation, controlling ignition sources, and detecting gas and fire; open-air ventilation helps leaks disperse, while enclosed structures can allow accumulation. These are general hydrogen-handling hazards, not a quantified risk assessment or safety certification for an RC model. NASA, 50th Anniversary Edition Scientific Ballooning Handbook.

Do not infer that an outdoor launch makes hydrogen handling safe. Filling, storage, transport, leaks, electrical equipment, and recovery all matter. The available evidence does not establish an RC-specific risk score or a safe hydrogen setup for a particular model.

Check the model’s gas approval before filling

Gas choice is not interchangeable across craft. The FAA’s guidance for captive gas balloons says, “You may only use those gasses that are approved for use in your balloon,” and directs operators to the operator’s manual or type certificate data sheet. That page concerns captive balloons, not a universal rule for RC airships, but its practical point applies: consult the documentation governing your specific model rather than assuming either gas is acceptable. For regulated airship contexts, the FAA’s airship policy index points to 14 CFR Parts 21, 43, and 91 and airship certification guidance. It does not by itself determine the rules for a particular small RC model. FAA airship regulations and guidance.

Which gas costs less?

There is no supported universal answer for an RC builder. A NASA 2007 concept report for an unmanned high-altitude airship described hydrogen as less expensive and more readily available than helium in that design’s context, while noting combustion precautions. It does not establish today’s consumer cylinder, rental, delivery, or refill prices. NASA high-altitude unmanned-airship concept report (2007).

How to choose for your RC airship

  1. Read the model documentation. Confirm which lifting gases are approved and follow the specified fill and handling procedure. If approval is unclear, ask the manufacturer rather than substituting a gas.
  2. Calculate net lift. Use the envelope’s actual volume and appropriate operating conditions, then subtract the complete airborne weight and planned payload.
  3. Assess the operating and filling environment. If hydrogen is explicitly permitted, consider where gas could accumulate, ignition sources, ventilation, leak detection, storage, and recovery. Do not improvise a hydrogen handling procedure from lift figures alone.
  4. Get delivered quotes for the required volume. Compare the full cost and refill terms for compatible supplies, not a general claim that one gas is cheaper.
  5. Choose the option that fits all constraints. Hydrogen’s extra lift is useful only if the model permits it and its fire hazards can be managed; helium’s lower reported lift may be an acceptable trade for its nonflammability.
