To fix stuttering or low FPS in an open-world racing game, first work out whether you have persistently low frame rates, brief hitches, screen tearing, or online rubberbanding. Then test reversible causes in order: update Windows and your graphics driver, confirm the game uses your dedicated GPU, reduce graphics settings, try a stable frame limit, and isolate background apps. Shader compilation and advanced system changes are game-specific, so check support for your exact title and version before applying them.
Why is my racing game stuttering even when FPS is high?
“Stuttering” can describe different problems, and the fix depends on which one you see. EA distinguishes brief microstutters from screen tearing and from rubberbanding, which is typically associated with a jittery or high-latency connection. Its PC graphics troubleshooting guide treats these as separate symptoms rather than assuming every hitch is a graphics fault.
- Low FPS throughout a drive: The game is consistently rendering fewer frames than you want. Graphics load, system capability, or configuration may be involved.
- Brief jolts despite a high average FPS: Frame delivery is uneven, or the game pauses briefly. Note whether it happens when entering a new area, after a patch, or at other repeatable moments.
- Tearing: The image appears split, with parts of multiple frames visible at once. This is different from a momentary slowdown.
- Rubberbanding online: Your car or other players appear to snap back or jump position. Check the connection and game-specific network guidance instead of treating it automatically as a GPU problem.
Record when the issue began and what changed just beforehand: a game patch, driver update, graphics setting, or hardware change. That history can help distinguish a new configuration problem from a repeatable in-game hitch.
How do I stop low FPS while driving around the open world?
1. Check Windows, the graphics driver, and GPU selection
Install available Windows updates and check for a current graphics driver from your GPU vendor. On a laptop, confirm that the game is assigned to the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics. EA notes that meeting a game’s minimum requirements means it can run; it does not guarantee good performance at maximum settings.

2. Close unnecessary apps and undo custom overclocks for a test
Close unnecessary background applications, particularly if the PC is close to the game’s minimum system requirements. If you have a custom CPU or GPU overclock, return it to factory defaults temporarily and compare. EA cautions that unsafe overclock settings can contribute to instability and overheating, so do not treat an overclock as a required performance fix.
If performance worsened after using NVIDIA App optimization, NVIDIA’s support guidance recommends checking for the latest game patch and graphics driver, then testing with third-party tools and background apps disabled. This is troubleshooting advice for that scenario, not evidence that NVIDIA App causes every performance problem. If the issue persists, NVIDIA asks users to report the affected game area and average FPS.
3. Lower graphics settings one at a time
Reduce the game’s graphics settings and check whether the symptom changes; restart the game if it requires a restart for settings to take effect. Lowering settings is a diagnostic as well as a potential workaround: improvement suggests rendering load may be part of the problem. If settings reductions do not affect the stutter, another cause may be involved. There is no single best preset for every game and PC.
Why does my game hitch when I enter a new area?
A hitch during a first drive, first launch, or soon after an update can be consistent with shader-cache generation in games that use it. It is only one possible explanation; do not assume every open-world racer builds shaders this way.

Square Enix describes a shader cache for its own game and provides a Compile Shader menu option to force compilation. Its support article estimates that process at 35–90 minutes depending on the PC. That estimate and procedure apply to the game covered by Square Enix’s article, not to racing games generally. Check your game’s official support page or settings for its actual shader-cache behavior.
Can a frame-rate cap make driving feel smoother?
It can be worth testing when FPS swings widely. iRacing Support says uncapped frame rates can fluctuate substantially in its simulator and recommends trying a steady limit. Its monitor-refresh examples are specific to iRacing; the right cap for another game depends on the title, display, and hardware. Compare an uncapped run with a limit your PC can maintain rather than treating one FPS target as a universal fix.
Use the game’s own frame limiter if available. Change only the cap for the comparison, and check the same route or area under similar conditions so you can tell whether frame pacing improves.
How should I test overlays and other advanced causes?
If the basic checks do not help, isolate software conflicts with controlled tests rather than uninstalling utilities or changing system settings at random.

- Temporarily disable overlays and nonessential background utilities, then test the same in-game area.
- If performance changes, re-enable the tools one at a time to identify whether a particular app coincides with the problem.
- Before changing DirectX modes, BIOS settings, power plans, USB setup, or hardware configuration, consult support and patch notes for your specific game and version.
EA suggests trying an alternate DirectX version for microstutter only when the game supports it, and advises checking patch notes before re-enabling a setting. iRacing Support lists simulator-specific possibilities such as USB configurations, BIOS or driver issues, sound drivers, replay storage, and display modes. Those examples are leads for diagnosis in the titles they address, not general fixes validated for every open-world racing game. Its articles on freezing and stuttering illustrate why game-specific guidance matters.

Game support can give more targeted advice if you include the details that make the symptom reproducible:
- Game title and edition, platform, and game version or recent patch.
- CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, and graphics-driver version.
- Display refresh rate and current graphics settings, including whether FPS is capped.
- Whether FPS is low throughout or the issue is a brief hitch, tearing, or online rubberbanding.
- Where and when it happens, when it began, and which checks changed the result.
There is no established single hardware purchase or setting that fixes stuttering across all open-world racers. A useful diagnosis starts with the symptom and a controlled change, not an assumption that the GPU, internet connection, or a component is at fault.
