If you mainly need to free disk space, start with Windows Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations; most people do not need System Mechanic just for routine cleanup. System Mechanic is a paid, broader maintenance suite with additional advertised tools for startup programs and system tuning. Choose it only if those extra features address a specific need you have.
What each tool is designed to do
Windows Storage Sense and other built-in cleanup options
Microsoft documents Storage Sense for Windows 10 and Windows 11. It can automatically remove temporary files and manage items in the Recycle Bin according to your settings. By default, it runs when the device is low on disk space, and it deletes Recycle Bin contents after a configured period. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance.
Windows also gives you more deliberate ways to inspect and clear storage. Storage settings show categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and system and reserved storage. Cleanup recommendations suggest items to review, including temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Disk Cleanup remains a manual option for selecting temporary and system file categories. Microsoft outlines these choices in its guides to Storage settings and freeing drive space.
System Mechanic
iolo describes System Mechanic as a Windows cleanup and optimization suite. Its product page advertises removal of more than 50 types of junk files, startup-program management, automated maintenance, and tools intended to tune CPU, memory, storage, or internet settings. These are the vendor’s feature claims, not independent evidence that the software improves performance or cleans more effectively than Windows tools. iolo also advertises detection or fixing of more than 30,000 issues; that figure should not be read as a measured user outcome. Details are on iolo’s System Mechanic page.

What Storage Sense will—and will not—delete
Storage Sense does not delete files in Downloads or manage cloud files unless you configure those options. Files marked “Always keep on this device” are exempt from online-only management. For cloud-synced files that Storage Sense makes online-only, Microsoft says they can be made locally available again when there is enough space and the device has connectivity; this is not the same as permanently deleting them.

Microsoft documents Storage Sense for the system drive, usually C:. Windows provides separate storage views and actions for other drives, so do not assume Storage Sense will manage every drive in the same way.
Storage Sense also cannot run unless you are signed in and online for more than 10 minutes, according to Microsoft’s guidance.

Which one should you choose?
Choose Windows tools for disk-space cleanup
Start in Windows Settings > System > Storage. Check the category breakdown, review Cleanup recommendations, and enable or adjust Storage Sense if you want eligible cleanup to happen automatically. Use Disk Cleanup if you want to select particular temporary or system file categories manually. Freeing space may help when preparing for a Windows update, but the space needed varies with the update path and optional content installed; Microsoft does not give one universal requirement. See Microsoft’s update-space guidance.
Consider System Mechanic for a specific extra feature
Consider the paid suite only if you want a feature beyond Windows’ cleanup controls—such as iolo’s advertised startup management or maintenance automation—and you are comfortable with a subscription. Verify the current product details, compatibility, price, and renewal terms before subscribing. iolo’s product page lists support for Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, and 7, but compatibility claims can change; check its current support information rather than relying on a legacy-version listing.
