A slow Windows PC can be caused by startup apps, low storage, malware, outdated software, or aging hardware—and more than one issue may be involved. Start by checking what is actually busy in Task Manager, then work through Windows’ built-in tools. The steps below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though labels and Settings paths can vary by version.

First, identify what feels slow

Note when the problem occurs: during startup, when opening apps or files, while multitasking, or all the time. That clue helps you avoid changing settings that have nothing to do with the slowdown.

Open Task Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Task Manager. Check Processes for apps using unusually high CPU, memory, or disk resources, and open Performance to see whether one of those resources stays busy. The Startup apps view shows which apps launch when you sign in and their reported startup impact. A busy resource is a useful lead, not proof by itself that a particular app is the cause. Microsoft’s performance guidance recommends using these views to identify resource-heavy processes.

Turn off unnecessary startup apps

Apps that launch at sign-in can slow startup and continue using resources in the background. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need immediately after signing in; leave unfamiliar entries alone until you know what they do.

#1 Best Overall
  1. In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Startup, then turn off nonessential apps.
  2. Alternatively, right-click Start, choose Task Manager, and select Startup apps. Review each app’s name and startup impact before disabling it.

Windows 10’s labels and layout may differ. If a route does not match your screen, search Settings for “startup apps.” Do not use blanket disable-all advice or registry edits as shortcuts; Microsoft warns that registry changes can have unintended consequences. Microsoft’s startup-app instructions describe the available controls.

Free up space with Windows’ storage tools

A drive that is nearly full can contribute to performance and update problems. Review what Windows proposes to remove rather than deleting files blindly.

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Review Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations. Select only categories you intend to remove, then confirm the cleanup.
  3. To automate eligible cleanup, open Storage Sense and review its settings before enabling it. Depending on your configuration, it can remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin.
  4. For another built-in option, search Start for Disk Cleanup and review the categories before proceeding.

Take particular care with personal files and previous Windows installations: removing an item can be irreversible or affect your ability to return to an earlier Windows version. Windows labels and available options may vary. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance explains its settings and cleanup behavior.

Install Windows updates and review optional drivers

Updates can include fixes and performance improvements. Open Settings > Windows Update and check for available updates, then install those appropriate for your device. Optional driver updates may help in some cases, but they are not a reason to install every optional item indiscriminately; choose a driver only when it fits your device or addresses a relevant issue. If the Settings path differs, search Settings for “Windows Update.” Microsoft’s update guidance covers checking for updates and optional drivers.

Run a Windows Security quick scan

Malware can use CPU and disk resources, so a scan is worthwhile if you notice unexplained activity or other signs of infection.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Quick scan and follow any on-screen recommendations.

A quick scan is a check, not a guarantee that every possible threat has been ruled out. Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance explains the built-in protection tools.

Close unused apps, then restart

Close apps and browser tabs you are not using, especially if Task Manager shows they are consuming substantial memory or CPU. Save your work and restart Windows if the PC has been running for a long time or the slowdown appeared recently. After sign-in, check whether the specific symptom you noted—such as slow startup or sluggish app launches—has changed.

When an SSD upgrade may help

Consider a hardware change only after the checks above. If Task Manager points to persistent disk activity and files or apps load slowly on a PC that uses a hard disk drive (HDD), replacing it with a compatible solid-state drive (SSD) may be relevant. Microsoft says HDD storage is typically slower to use than SSD or eMMC storage; it does not promise a particular improvement for a particular PC. Confirm that the computer supports an SSD and that the drive’s interface and physical form factor fit before buying or arranging installation. Microsoft’s storage guidance explains the HDD, SSD, and eMMC distinction. Windows generally optimizes drives automatically, including trimming SSDs, so manual drive-optimization tweaks are not a substitute for diagnosing a failing or unsuitable drive.

If CPU or memory remains the likely bottleneck, or the PC is slow across many unrelated tasks despite these checks, software cleanup may not make a meaningful difference. Compare repair or replacement options against the computer’s age, compatibility, and remaining usefulness; there is no universal threshold at which replacement is the right choice.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A performance tune-up does not change that support status. Check Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support information for current details.

Reset Windows only as a last resort

Resetting Windows is not routine cleanup. Microsoft warns that reset options can remove apps, settings, or personal files, depending on the option selected. If you are considering a reset, first back up important files and follow Microsoft’s full recovery guidance rather than relying on an abbreviated checklist: Windows recovery options and how to reset your PC.
