Stop using it for account logins, disconnect it from Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and use a separate trusted device to secure important accounts. The page cannot tell you what payload ran—or prove that the computer is clean.
Why a fake Cloudflare check can put your computer at risk
These lures are a form of social engineering known as ClickFix: a page presents a supposed technical fix or human-verification step and persuades you to run an attacker-provided command. The instructions may direct you to Windows Run, Terminal, or PowerShell. A fake Cloudflare Turnstile interaction may copy the command to your clipboard, making it easier to paste and execute. Microsoft Threat Intelligence describes this technique and its observed payloads.
Once run, a command can download malware. Campaigns have used different payloads, including information-stealing malware and remote-access tools, so the page’s appearance does not identify what may have reached your device. The U.S. HHS Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center explains that ClickFix can induce command execution and malware delivery.
A useful safety rule: a human-verification challenge should not require you to run an arbitrary command in Windows Run, Terminal, or PowerShell. If a page asks you to do that, stop.

What to do now, in order
- Stop interacting with the page. Close it. Do not run another command or follow cleanup instructions displayed by the same page.
- Disconnect the computer from the network. Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet while arranging an assessment. This is a cautious containment step; it does not establish whether malware is present or remove anything.
- Do not use that computer to access accounts. On a separate trusted device, change important passwords, starting with your primary email and financial accounts. Where available, revoke active sessions and enable multifactor authentication.
- Contact workplace IT or security if it is a managed device. Report that you ran a command from a fake verification page, and follow your organization’s incident process. Do not try to clean the computer or delete files and other artifacts on your own unless your IT team directs you to.
- Arrange a security assessment. For a personal device, use reputable security software or a qualified technician. Explain what happened, including whether you ran the command or only copied it. A scan can help with assessment, but one clean result is not proof that every possible infection is gone.
- Check for account misuse from the trusted device. Review recent activity on important accounts. If you see unfamiliar access or cannot sign in, use the service’s official account-recovery process.
If you only copied the command
If you copied text but did not run or paste it into a command window, the command has not been executed through that action. Close the page and do not paste or run the text. If you are unsure whether it ran, or another action followed, treat the device as potentially compromised and follow the response steps above.
What this does—and does not—tell you
Running the command creates a real risk, but the fake page cannot establish whether it completed, what it downloaded, or whether the device is now clean. The specific payload varies by campaign; do not infer that your computer has a particular virus or remote-access tool based only on the page. Microsoft’s account of ClickFix campaigns describes varied outcomes, including information theft and data exfiltration.

Scale reports should not be mistaken for an estimate of your personal risk: Microsoft reported observing ClickFix campaigns targeting thousands of enterprise and end-user devices globally each day in its August 21, 2025 article. Separately, Malwarebytes reported on May 26, 2026, that one campaign involved more than 700 Ghost-powered websites; that figure refers to that campaign, not all ClickFix activity or confirmed victims. Malwarebytes’ campaign report also recommends current, reputable anti-malware protection.
