To clean a Shark FlexStyle HD400-series filter, switch the unit off, unplug it, slide off the filter cover at the bottom, and brush dust from the filter with a new toothbrush. Slide the cover back on until it clicks. Shark recommends monthly cleaning for HD400EU models; clean sooner if airflow changes or you see buildup.
Clean the FlexStyle filter
- Switch off and unplug the unit. Do this before maintenance, as directed in the Shark HD400-series manual.
- Remove the filter cover. Find it at the bottom of the FlexStyle and slide it off.
- Brush the filter. Use a new toothbrush to brush away dust and debris. The manual specifies brushing; it does not instruct you to rinse or wash this filter.
- Reinstall the cover. Slide it back onto the bottom until it clicks into place.
Shark’s HD400-series manual says that changed airflow or air power, blocked airflow, or visible buildup on the lower inlet indicates the unit needs cleaning. Shark’s HD400EU FAQ recommends cleaning monthly. Treat that interval as guidance for the HD400EU models covered by that FAQ, rather than assuming it applies to every FlexStyle model.
Check the inlet if airflow is weak
During use, keep your hand clear of the filter cover and lower inlet. Shark warns that covering the inlet can obstruct airflow and reduce performance. If you notice a change in airflow, blockage, or visible dust at the inlet, switch off and unplug the unit, then clean the filter using the steps above.
If airflow is still weak after cleaning
The cited manual and FAQ identify filter buildup and an obstructed inlet as airflow clues, but they do not provide a complete diagnosis or repair procedure for weak airflow that continues after cleaning. Check the instructions for your exact model or contact Shark support for guidance. Do not assume that a styling attachment or replacement part will fix the problem.

Check your FlexStyle model
These cleaning steps are based on Shark’s HD400-series instructions. The HD400EU FAQ covers specified regional HD400EU models. Check the model number on your unit and consult its manual if the filter cover or inlet differs; do not substitute cleaning directions for Shark vacuum filters, which may have different care instructions.
