Apple’s published specifications show that the iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro Max share the same listed display size, resolution and storage tiers, while the 18 Pro Max weighs 16 grams more. Those facts alone do not establish that the newer phone is a better buy: Apple’s comparison page does not provide usable current prices, and the available specifications are not independent tests of camera quality, battery life or performance. Compare the models at the same capacity and local price; if you already own the 17 Pro Max, wait for credible head-to-head testing before upgrading for those unverified gains.
What is different between the iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro Max?
Apple’s current comparison lineup includes both models. Its page identifies the iPhone 17 Pro Max as available at authorized resellers, but the price fields appear as dynamic placeholders, so they do not establish a current price or price difference. Check local listings for both phones on the day you buy, and compare matching storage capacities. Apple’s iPhone comparison page
| Specification | iPhone 18 Pro Max | iPhone 17 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| Display size | 6.9 inches (Apple specification) | 6.9 inches (Apple Support specification) |
| Display resolution | 2868 by 1320 pixels | 2868 by 1320 pixels |
| Pixel density | 460 ppi | 460 ppi |
| Listed weight | 249 g | 233 g |
| Listed storage capacities | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB |
Specifications are from Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications and iPhone 17 Pro Max technical specifications. The matching display figures do not show that one screen is visibly better; judging that would require evidence beyond size and resolution. The 18 Pro Max’s listed weight is 16 grams higher, a difference worth considering if you often use a large phone one-handed. Weight alone cannot predict how comfortable either model will feel to you.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if its verified advantages matter to you
Consider the 18 Pro Max if you want the newest model and its current price at your preferred storage capacity makes sense for your budget. Before paying more, look for independent comparisons that test camera output, battery runtime and performance under comparable conditions. The manufacturer specifications cited here do not establish an advantage in those areas.

Choose the iPhone 17 Pro Max if it is meaningfully cheaper
The 17 Pro Max is a sensible choice if an authorized reseller or other trustworthy local seller offers it for less at the same storage capacity and it meets your needs. Apple Support identifies 2025 as its introduction year. Confirm the seller, warranty and availability where you live; the comparison page’s reseller note does not guarantee stock or a particular price.
Should you upgrade from an iPhone 17 Pro Max?
Do not upgrade solely because the 18 Pro Max is newer. The published specifications establish a heavier body for the new model, but they do not establish that its camera, battery or processor is better in real use. If one of those is your reason to switch, wait for independent, like-for-like results and compare them with the cost of upgrading. If the change you want is a larger or higher-resolution display, Apple’s listed figures do not show a difference between these two phones.

What Apple’s specifications do—and do not—tell you
Water resistance
Apple Support gives the iPhone 17 Pro Max an IP68 rating under IEC 60529 and says it was tested under controlled laboratory conditions to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. This is a manufacturer’s test condition, not a guarantee against water damage in everyday use or a promise that resistance remains unchanged over time. Apple Support’s specification page
Recycled content
Apple reports recycled content of 40% for the iPhone 18 Pro family and 30% for the iPhone 17 Pro family. These are Apple-reported figures, not a complete comparison of each phone’s lifecycle environmental impact. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specifications and Apple Support’s iPhone 17 Pro Max specifications
