A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For fast Windows filename searches, Everything is the most direct fit. If you need searches across document contents and other indexed data, start with Windows Search. Choose PowerToys Run or Command Palette if you want file lookup inside a broader keyboard-driven launcher. These tools search different indexes and locations, so there is no established universal speed winner.
Choose by what you need to find
- A filename or path you remember: Try Everything, which is designed around filename and path lookup.
- Information across indexed documents and other data: Use Windows Search, whose search platform covers common types such as documents, photos, multimedia, email, and contacts.
- File search as part of a keyboard launcher: Consider PowerToys Run or Command Palette. Their broader workflows include other actions, but their file-search coverage and capabilities differ.
“Fast” depends partly on what is indexed and where the file lives. Official descriptions call Everything’s filename searches instant, but the available documentation does not provide a controlled comparison against Windows Search or the PowerToys launchers.
Everything: best fit for filename-first searches
Everything is a dedicated Windows file-search engine. Its publisher lists quick indexing, instant filename searching, real-time updates, offline operation, and no telemetry as features; those are publisher descriptions, not comparative benchmark results.
Everything’s help says it creates an index of local NTFS volumes when it first runs. You can search using part of a name, an extension such as *.pdf, or a full path. That makes it a strong choice when you know, or partly remember, the file’s name or location. Do not assume that this initial index includes every drive, filesystem, or storage location you use; check your setup if a target is missing.
#1 Best Overall
- Data recovery software for retrieving lost files
- Easily recover documents, audios, videos, photos, images and e-mails
- Rescue the data deleted from your recycling bin
- Prepare yourself in case of a virus attack
- Program compatible with Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 7
Everything’s documented search focus is filenames and paths. If you need to find words inside documents or search other kinds of data, Windows Search is the more relevant option to consider.
Windows Search: built-in search across indexed data
Microsoft describes Windows Search as a desktop search platform for common file and data types, including documents, photos, multimedia, email, contacts, and calendar appointments. Its coverage depends on what Windows Search indexes; do not assume every file or drive is included by default.
Rank #2
Check which drives are covered and which locations are excluded in Windows Search settings if expected results do not appear. The PowerToys Run documentation directs users to those settings and makes the index dependency explicit for its Windows Search plugin. Windows Search is the better starting point when you need broader indexed data rather than only a known filename.
PowerToys Run: file lookup in a launcher
PowerToys is Microsoft’s free, open-source collection of Windows utilities. PowerToys Run includes a Windows Search plugin, so it can search indexed files and folders from its launcher interface.
Rank #3
- Intuitive interface of a conventional FTP client
- Easy and Reliable FTP Site Maintenance.
- FTP Automation and Synchronization
That convenience comes with the same coverage constraint as Windows Search: the plugin searches only what Windows Search has indexed. Choose Run if you want file lookup within a keyboard-driven launcher; inspect Windows Search’s drive and exclusion settings if results are incomplete.
Command Palette: a broader action launcher
PowerToys Command Palette can search files and folders, launch apps, run commands, browse the web, and reach Windows tools. It suits people who want several actions in one interface, not just file lookup.
Rank #4
The documentation describes its functions but does not establish that Command Palette searches files faster than Everything or Windows Search. Choose it for the combined launcher workflow, not on an assumed speed advantage.

A Windows Central comparison published September 17, 2025, describes Listary’s integration with File Explorer and file dialogs. That may be relevant if you want search close to the places where you browse or open files. The article’s pricing information is dated reporting; current price and features are not established here, so check Listary’s current information before making a purchase decision.

No controlled, comparable speed test is available for these options. Rather than treating “fastest” as a universal ranking, match the tool to the search job and the locations it can reach:
Quick Recap
- Decide what to search. For filenames and paths, start with Everything. For broader indexed data, try Windows Search.
- Check where the files are. Everything documents an initial index of local NTFS volumes. PowerToys Run’s Windows Search plugin is limited to Windows Search-indexed files and folders. Verify coverage for the drives and folders you actually use.
- Choose the interface. Use a dedicated file-search tool if that is your main task; choose PowerToys Run or Command Palette if you also want launcher actions.
- Compare on your own setup if speed is decisive. Search for the same files on the same drives and note whether the relevant locations and content are indexed. Results will reflect your configuration, not a general benchmark.
