Windows Search web results, Search highlights, and personalized recommendations are controlled separately. In Windows 11, use Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers to reduce personalized offers and app-launch tracking. To stop web queries and web results while keeping local Search, use Microsoft’s Don’t search the web or display web results in Search policy on a supported managed edition. Search highlights have their own policy.
Choose the control that matches what you want to remove
| Goal | Control | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce personalized offers and app-launch-based personalization | Windows 11 Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers | Changes personalization and offer settings; it is not a guaranteed switch for web results. Microsoft Support |
| Stop web queries and web results in Search | Don’t search the web or display web results in Search policy | Prevents web queries and web results while leaving local Search available. Supported editions are limited; see the policy’s edition list. Microsoft Learn |
| Hide Search highlights | Allow search highlights policy | Turns off highlights in Search home and the Start menu search box without disabling Search. Microsoft Learn |
| Remove the Search interface | Fully disable Search UI policy | Hides Search and its entry points, including keyboard shortcuts and Start/taskbar controls; this is broader than hiding web content. Microsoft Learn |
Turn off personalized recommendations in Windows 11
On a personal Windows 11 PC, open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. Microsoft is replacing the older General privacy page with Recommendations & offers in newer Windows 11 versions, so the exact label or location may vary by update. Microsoft Support
- Turn off Get personalized tips, ads, and recommendations based on my Windows activity to stop this category of personalized offers. Microsoft says these offers can cover Microsoft and third-party products, services, features, apps, and hardware.
- Turn off Let Windows improve Start and search results by tracking app launches to stop this form of app-launch tracking and personalization, including its effect on the most-used apps list. This setting is not described as disabling web queries.
- Turn off Show me suggested content in the Settings app if you also want to remove suggestions within Settings.
These options address recommendations and personalization, not every web result that may appear in Search. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish a single consumer setting that removes all web results, highlights, and recommendations across every Windows build.
Stop web results while keeping local Search
Microsoft documents Don’t search the web or display web results in Search as the policy for blocking web queries and results. It is managed through Group Policy or policy deployment, and the policy’s supported-edition list names Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise—not Pro. Confirm the target Windows edition before planning a deployment. The policy CSP lists support beginning with Windows 10 version 1803 and later. Microsoft Learn: Policy CSP – Search

Use Group Policy
In the Local Group Policy Editor or a centrally managed Group Policy, go to Computer Configuration > Windows Components > Search > Don’t search the web or display web results in Search and set the policy to Enabled. Microsoft says enabling it prevents web queries and stops web results from appearing when a user searches. If the policy is not configured, users can choose whether Search uses the web and displays web results. Microsoft Learn
Use the documented registry mapping
For policy deployment, Microsoft maps this setting to the following value:

Use the named policy and its current documentation when deploying the setting. Microsoft’s connection-management documentation also lists a legacy DisableWebSearch value set to 1; do not assume similarly named registry values are interchangeable. The module documentation does not establish availability on every Windows edition or build, so confirm that the cmdlet is present and applicable on the target device before using it. Turn off Search highlights separately
If the unwanted content is trending topics or other Search highlights, use the separate Allow search highlights policy and disable it. Microsoft maps the policy to EnableDynamicContentInWSB under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindows Search. Disabling the policy removes highlights in Search home and the Start menu search box; it does not turn off the Search interface. Microsoft Learn: Policy CSP – Search
Why not disable Search entirely?
The Fully disable Search UI policy hides Search and its entry points, including keyboard shortcuts and Start/taskbar search controls. That can also remove access to local Search, so it is a poor fit if the goal is only to suppress web content. Use the narrower web-results policy when it is available for the device’s edition. What these settings do not change
- Turning off personalized tips, ads, and recommendations only affects that category of personalized offers; it does not remove every ad in Windows. Microsoft separately notes that turning off the advertising ID does not reduce the number of ads, and that other advertising methods are not governed by that ID setting. Microsoft Support
- Turning off app-launch tracking affects app-based Start and Search personalization; Microsoft does not describe it as a way to disable web queries.
- The web-results policy is not listed for every Windows edition. The cited policy table names Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise, so Windows Pro and Home users should not assume they can apply it through the same managed-policy route.
