Set up a gaming mouse by choosing a comfortable DPI, selecting a stable polling rate supported by the mouse, assigning only useful extra buttons, and testing the configuration in the game you play. There is no universally best DPI or polling rate: the right setup depends on your mouse, game, computer, and preference.

1. Install the software for your exact mouse

Check the mouse’s model number and use its manufacturer support page to find the correct configuration software. A brand’s app may not support every mouse it sells, and menus vary by model. The steps below are brand-agnostic unless identified as a Logitech G PRO example.

In the software, locate the controls for sensitivity or DPI, report rate or polling rate, button assignments, and profiles. If the mouse has onboard memory, look for a way to save settings to the device.

2. Choose a DPI you can control

DPI, or dots per inch, affects how far the pointer moves for a given physical mouse movement: a higher DPI makes the pointer move farther. It is a sensitivity setting, not a measure of a mouse’s accuracy, and no single value suits every player or game. Logitech G’s guide explains the term and its effect on pointer movement.

  1. Start with one DPI level that feels manageable in both menus and your game.
  2. If the software allows it, remove extra DPI stages or disable DPI cycling if you keep switching levels by accident.
  3. Adjust DPI in small steps. Keep the game’s sensitivity unchanged while you assess the change, so you can tell which setting affected the feel.

As a model-specific example, Logitech’s G PRO setup guide supports up to five configurable DPI levels. That is a feature of the documented mouse and software, not a standard for all gaming mice. Logitech’s G PRO configuration guide

3. Set the polling rate

Polling rate, also called report rate, is how often the mouse reports its position to the computer. A rate of 1,000 reports per second corresponds to a nominal interval of 1 millisecond between reports; that figure describes the reporting interval, not a guaranteed improvement in gameplay.

Logitech G502 Hero Wired Gaming Mouse - Black
  • HERO Gaming Sensor: Next generation HERO mouse sensor delivers precision tracking up to 25600 DPI with zero smoothing, filtering or acceleration
  • 11 programmable buttons and dual mode hyper-fast scroll wheel: The Logitech wired gaming mouse gives you fully customizable control over your gameplay
  • Adjustable weights: Match your playing style. Arrange up to five 3.6 g weights for a personalized weight and balance configuration

  • Mechanical Switch Button Tensioning: A metal spring tensioning system and metal pivot hinges are built into left and right computer gaming mouse buttons for a crisp, clean click feel with rapid click feedback

Choose a rate your mouse supports and that works reliably with your setup. In its G PRO guide, Logitech documents 125, 250, 500, and 1,000 reports per second, and recommends 500 for most PCs. This is manufacturer guidance for that device’s setup documentation, not a universal benchmark or a rule for every mouse. Logitech Support: G PRO pointer settings

If you are unsure where to start, try a supported middle setting such as 500 reports per second when available, then check that the mouse behaves consistently in your game. Do not assume that selecting the highest number will produce a noticeable benefit on every computer.

4. Assign extra buttons to useful actions

Use the mouse software to assign actions that you reach for often and can press comfortably, such as push-to-talk or a game action. Keep primary click and scroll-wheel functions intact unless you have a specific reason to change them.

  • Test each assignment in the game, not just in the configuration app.
  • Check the game’s rules before using macros or commands that automate actions; what the mouse software permits and what a game allows are separate questions.
  • If the side buttons behave unexpectedly, check their assignment in the mouse software. Windows commonly identifies two side inputs as XBUTTON1 and XBUTTON2, often used for browser back and forward; the exact behavior can depend on the app and configuration. Microsoft Learn’s mouse input guide

5. Save a profile for the game

If the software supports per-game profiles, create one for the game and confirm that it activates when the game runs. Otherwise, save a general profile with your preferred DPI, report rate, and button assignments.

Some mice can store settings onboard, so the configuration travels with the mouse rather than relying on the software profile being active on a particular computer. For example, Logitech’s G PRO guide documents both Automatic Game Detection and On-Board Memory modes; in On-Board Memory mode, settings are written directly to the mouse. Other models may offer different options or none at all. Logitech’s G PRO configuration guide

6. Check Windows pointer settings

On Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse to check the primary button and pointer speed. For additional controls, open Additional mouse settings, then select the Pointer Options tab. Microsoft documents these controls in its Change mouse settings support page; use the instructions for your Windows version, since the page also includes legacy guidance.

Windows pointer speed and Enhance pointer precision are separate from the mouse’s DPI setting. Logitech’s G PRO guide advises leaving acceleration off for gaming accuracy while acknowledging that preference matters. Treat that as Logitech’s recommendation for its guide, not a universal requirement. If you change Windows pointer options, do so deliberately and assess the result in your game.

7. Test the setup, then change one setting at a time

  1. Launch the game and use the same in-game sensitivity and play area while evaluating the mouse.
  2. Check whether you can make the movements you need without overshooting or struggling to reach them.
  3. If movement feels too fast, lower DPI or in-game sensitivity; change one rather than both at once.
  4. If the selected report rate causes instability or seems unnecessary for your setup, try a lower rate supported by the mouse.
  5. Verify that each assigned button performs the intended action and that the correct profile is active.

The cited manufacturer and Microsoft documentation describes available controls and setup options; it does not establish one optimal DPI or polling rate for every player or prove that a higher polling rate improves every player’s results.
