Compared with the original Ace, Sonos lists longer battery life, more microphones, and redesigned drivers, while marketing the Ultra’s noise cancellation as up to twice as powerful. Whether those changes matter depends chiefly on whether you already use Sonos speakers and how much you value private movie listening.
What is the Sonos Ace Ultra?
The Ace Ultra is Sonos’s premium wireless over-ear headphone. The company’s US product listing showed a price of $449 in 2026; price and availability can change. Sonos advertises spatial and lossless audio, Dolby Atmos, Adaptive ANC and EQ, Aware Mode, dynamic head tracking, and both USB-C and 3.5 mm connections. The listed package includes a travel case, USB-C-to-USB-C cable, USB-C-to-3.5 mm cable, and setup and legal information alongside the headphones. Sonos Ace Ultra product listing
Sonos claims up to 35 hours of listening with ANC enabled and says a three-minute charge can provide up to three hours of playback. These are manufacturer figures, not independently verified runtime results. Sonos also says the Ultra offers “up to 2x more Active Noise Cancellation than Sonos Ace”; that, too, is a product-page claim rather than a universal measured comparison.

Why the Sonos connection is the biggest distinction
The original Ace was positioned as a headphone; the Ultra’s more distinctive role is joining a Sonos home setup. What Hi-Fi? describes transferring film audio from a Beam (Gen 2) to the Ultra and back using the Sonos app and the headphone’s Content Key. Tom’s Guide likewise describes Bluetooth use away from home and direct Wi-Fi linking to a Sonos system for TV audio handoff. The exact compatible products and requirements may depend on current software and rollout, so consult Sonos’s live support information before choosing a speaker for this feature.

- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
Sonos CEO Tom Conrad told TechRadar that the first Ace lacked the platform needed for the new system connection, which required Wi-Fi performance and secure credential storage. That explanation helps clarify why the Ultra is not simply an Ace with more microphones: its home-system role depends on connectivity and platform capabilities as well as headphone hardware. TV audio handoff and private listening
For a Sonos household, the practical appeal is moving a film or TV session from compatible home audio to headphones without treating the Ultra as an ordinary Bluetooth pair. What Hi-Fi? reports using the app and Content Key for transfers with a Beam (Gen 2); Tom’s Guide also highlights TV audio handoff. These are reviewer-described features, not a guarantee that every Sonos product or software configuration supports the same workflow.

TrueCinema and spatial movie listening
What Hi-Fi? describes TrueCinema as a room-calibration feature intended to create spatial movie listening over the headphones. Tom’s Guide also mentions TrueCinema and Dolby Atmos on supported setups. This makes movie playback a central use case, but it should not be mistaken for evidence that every film, service, or speaker configuration produces the same result.
What reviewers say about sound, movies, and portability
TechRadar reports testing the Ultra for approximately two weeks, including music, Dolby Atmos films, TV audio swap, and comparisons with the original Ace and competitors. Its reviewer praised the movie experience, ecosystem functions, design, and value relative to the original. The same review says some rivals may have an edge in sound quality and fold more compactly for travel. Those are the publication’s judgments, not a controlled cross-laboratory consensus. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider the Ace Ultra?
- Existing Sonos households: Consider it if transferring TV or movie audio between headphones and compatible home audio is a feature you will actually use. Verify compatibility for your specific setup.
- Primarily Bluetooth listeners: Compare it with other premium headphones on sound, ANC, comfort, portability, and current street price. The Sonos home-system connection may add little value if you do not own compatible gear.
- Original Ace owners: The Ultra’s listed advantages include longer claimed battery life, two additional microphones, a redesigned driver assembly, and Adaptive ANC and EQ. Decide whether those changes and the home-system connection justify the cost of switching; the cited material does not establish a measured performance gain for every feature.
