A game update can change code, files, interfaces, or data that a mod depends on, leaving the mod incompatible with the new build. Check the exact game and mod versions, dependencies, and conflicts first; then disable mods to see whether the same problem occurs without them. Keep a recoverable save before changing anything, because the right fix depends on the game, platform, and mod.
Why did my mods stop working after an update?
Mods are built around assumptions about a particular game version, data format, interface, dependency set, or in-game behavior. A patch can change one of those assumptions. A mod may then crash the game, fail to load a save, break an interface or visual effect, or appear enabled while doing nothing.
That does not automatically mean the mod itself is defective. It may need an update from its creator, depend on another mod or loader that is missing or incompatible, or conflict with another add-on. Damaged base-game files can also cause problems. Larian Studios describes these risks for supported mods in Baldur’s Gate 3; Bethesda Support warns that recently updated Skyrim mods may not work properly until their creators update them.
Why does my game crash after an update?
A crash is one possible symptom, not a diagnosis. Larian lists launch crashes, saves that stop loading, interface issues, and visual problems among issues players may encounter with modded Baldur’s Gate 3 saves. Similar-looking failures can also come from the base game or its installation, so identify whether the issue follows the mod setup before choosing a fix.

Do not assume that changing load order, reinstalling every mod, deleting folders, or rolling back the game is safe or necessary. Those steps are title- and platform-specific; a save can also be affected by removing mods. Follow the game’s own support guidance before making changes that could affect saves or installed files.
How do I check whether a mod is outdated?
- Write down your setup. Record the game version or build, platform and storefront, mod manager or loader, installed mod names and versions, required dependencies, and the first error or symptom. Keep an unmodded save or another recoverable backup when possible; Bethesda specifically advises keeping unmodded saves available to revert to.
- Compare the mod with the installed game build. Check the mod’s listing, creator’s instructions, or manager for an update and compatibility notes. In Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian says the Installed tab shows an Update button when a mod needs updating. Do not treat another game’s version labels or update process as universal.
- Check required dependencies and loaders. Confirm that each requirement is installed and supports your game build. For Minecraft, CurseForge advises selecting a modloader version or type compatible with the chosen Minecraft version. Missing or mismatched dependencies can stop a mod from installing or working.
- Look for known conflicts. Check the mod creator’s notes and the game or platform’s support information for conflicts with other add-ons. Minecraft add-ons, for example, can have resource-pack, behavior-pack, or add-on conflicts; those details do not automatically apply to other games.
How can I tell if a mod or the game itself is broken?
- Disable the mod set using the game’s or manager’s supported method. Test the same action that caused the failure. Larian recommends unchecking installed mods to see whether a Baldur’s Gate 3 problem persists. Bethesda recommends removing a Creation or mod and reloading as a way to check whether it is implicated. Take care around saves and follow the relevant game’s instructions.
- If the problem stops, investigate the mod setup. Re-enable only compatible mods in small steps, using the official manager or creator instructions, and test after each change. This can narrow the cause to a mod, dependency, or interaction. If the fault follows a player-created mod, contact its author.
- If the problem remains with mods disabled, investigate the base game. Use the publisher’s support instructions for your game and platform. Bethesda’s Skyrim PC guidance includes verifying files through Steam; that is an example for Skyrim on that storefront, not a universal fix for consoles or other PC launchers.
What information should I send to a mod creator or support?
For a problem that follows a particular mod, contact its creator and include the game version, mod version, relevant dependencies, the symptom, and any relevant logs. Larian directs players to the mod author for player-created mod issues. CurseForge Support also asks for logs in several unresolved cases. Avoid sending only “it crashes”: the exact build and the steps that reproduce the problem help distinguish a compatibility issue from a broader game fault.

Do multiplayer players need matching mods?
Check the individual game’s rules rather than assuming all games handle modded multiplayer the same way. For Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian says all participants need the same mods and versions. Cross-platform play, cross-platform saves, and other titles may have different requirements; verify those before changing a shared setup.

There is no safe, universal rollback procedure. Whether an older build is available—and whether using it is safe—depends on the title, platform, and storefront. Consult that game’s publisher and platform instructions before attempting a rollback, and consider how the change could affect saves or multiplayer compatibility.
