Yes. Chrome 155 adds support for displaying JPEG XL images in web pages. The browser decodes the image/jxl format in Blink using jxl-rs, a memory-safe decoder written in Rust. For most people, that means a current Chrome 155 installation can open a supported .jxl image without a separate browser extension.
What Chrome 155 adds
Chrome 155’s release notes list JPEG XL decoding support in Blink. The format is standardized as ISO/IEC 18181, and the browser implementation uses jxl-rs, described by Chrome as a memory-safe pure Rust decoder. The web image type is image/jxl; files commonly use the .jxl extension. Chrome 155 release notes
Chrome’s feature description identifies JPEG XL support for progressive decoding, wide color gamut, HDR, high bit depth, and animation. Those are format capabilities, not a guarantee that every image uses them or that every display can show their full range. Chrome 155 release notes

Chrome 155 support versus the earlier Chrome 145 trial
JPEG XL appeared earlier in Chrome 145 as an origin trial, rather than the release-note feature announced for Chrome 155. That trial was gated by the enable-jxl-image-format flag and the enable_jxl_decoder build flag. The Chrome 155 release notes list JPEG XL decoding support without describing it as that earlier gated trial. Chrome 145 release notes Chrome 155 release notes

When websites should consider JPEG XL
Chrome 155’s support makes JPEG XL a browser option for sites, but it does not establish that JXL is always smaller or faster than AVIF, WebP, or JPEG. Developers should test representative images at comparable visual quality and against the browser versions their audience uses.
Useful evaluation points include:
-
File size at the visual quality the site needs.
-
Encoding workflow, tools, and processing cost.
-
Whether progressive rendering, animation, HDR, wide color gamut, or high bit depth matters for the content.
