Best free mod manager for multiple games: Vortex vs. Mod Organizer 2
These are the two options in this comparison that serve as general-purpose managers across multiple games. Their support is not interchangeable: the important question is not just whether a game appears on a list, but what features the manager provides for that game.

Both projects describe their software as free and open source: see Vortex and MO2. MO2’s documentation also cautions that it is sparse, so finding clear instructions for a particular setup may take extra effort.
How to choose the right manager for your games
Choose Vortex for breadth and Nexus Mods integration
Vortex is the practical first option when you want a single manager for several games and use Nexus Mods to find or install mods. Nexus lists games such as Skyrim, Fallout, The Witcher series, and Stardew Valley among those it supports. That broad count is useful for narrowing your choice, not proof that every game has the same tools or workflow.

Choose MO2 for games it fully supports
MO2’s official game-support documentation identifies fully supported titles that include Skyrim variants, Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout games, and Tale of Two Wastelands. For a game on that list, MO2 is a strong choice if you want its mod-management workflow. The MO2 game-support page distinguishes full support from basic support and should be checked for the current status of your title.
Understand what “basic support” means in MO2
A game with basic support may still work with MO2, but it does not necessarily get the same capabilities as a fully supported game. The project explains that basic support may virtually place files, while conflicts can go undetected when files do not overlap. Certain arrangements involving DLLs or executables at the game’s top level can also cause problems. If detailed conflict visibility or a dependable virtualized workflow matters for your setup, prefer a game listed as fully supported.

Check these details before installing
- Exact game: Confirm the manager lists the specific title and check whether support is full, basic, or otherwise limited.
- Edition and storefront: A supported game does not guarantee that every edition works. MO2 says Windows Store and Game Pass versions of supported games are incompatible with its virtual filesystem; review its release notes for current details.
- Operating system: Nexus Mods says Linux is not currently a supported Vortex platform and has not confirmed a timeline for official Linux support. Do not assume Windows guidance applies to Linux or Steam Deck setups.
- Mod source and workflow: Vortex has close integration with Nexus Mods. If you use another mod-hosting site, check whether its mods and installation instructions work with your chosen manager.
- Separate loaders or tools: Some games require a game-specific mod loader in addition to a manager. Verify requirements for the mods you plan to use.
Stardew Valley: a manager and a mod loader do different jobs
SMAPI is Stardew Valley’s mod loader, not a universal mod manager comparable to Vortex or MO2. It may be part of a Stardew Valley setup alongside a manager: the manager can help organize or install mods, while SMAPI loads them when the game runs. Check the current SMAPI page for supported systems and game-version requirements; those details can change.
What about the Nexus Mods App?
Nexus Mods says its app may continue to work, but it will not receive updates or fixes, and there is no direct automatic migration to Vortex. The company’s FAQ, last updated January 14, 2026, also covers the app’s status and Vortex’s platform support. For a new setup, Vortex is the more current Nexus-backed option.

Which mod manager supports my game?
Use the official support pages rather than relying only on a manager’s headline game count. Check Vortex’s game information or the MO2 support list, then confirm your storefront and operating system are compatible. Support lists, app status, and software releases can change.
