Treat scan results, popularity, and antivirus warnings as evidence—not guarantees. If the source or file looks wrong, don’t download or run it.
Start with the source, not the download button
Find the mod through the game’s official mod area or a recognized platform’s own website or client. Be wary of a project page that sends you to an unexpected mirror, or of messages insisting that you must download an external file quickly. Never enter your platform credentials on an unofficial login page. Steam warns that malware targeting its users can be disguised as cheats, fake demos or gaming-related utilities, including mod or inventory managers: Steam Account Security Recommendations.
A familiar platform is a useful starting point, but it does not make every file safe. Check the file you plan to download, rather than relying only on the project’s reputation or page-level status.
Check the status of the exact file
On Nexus Mods, open the mod’s Files tab and inspect the badge next to the specific file. Nexus explains that the badges represent different checks and states:

- Green check: the file passed Nexus’s internal checks and a VirusTotal scan.
- Blue check: the file passed internal checks, but VirusTotal scanning was unavailable.
- White check: the file has not been scanned.
- Yellow question mark: scanning is in progress and the file is not available to download.
- Red cross: checks failed, or the VirusTotal report has a significant number of positives; the file needs moderator review.
Clicking a Nexus indicator opens the VirusTotal report. Read it as additional evidence, not as a certification. Nexus says a red indicator does not automatically prove that a file is malicious, but it is a reason to stop and examine the details rather than proceed as usual. Check whether the file makes sense for the mod
Read the description, installation instructions, file type, and update history before downloading. Ask whether the listed contents fit what the mod claims to change and how it is meant to be installed. Treat unexplained executables, nested archives, or unrelated files as reasons to pause. Nexus notes that self-extracting files are commonly used by malicious actors and may be blocked or reviewed; its guidance on why a mod may be quarantined describes this concern.

Use downloads, endorsements, and how long the file has been available as context, not proof. A new file or recently created uploader account deserves closer scrutiny, but neither fact alone establishes that the upload is unsafe. Conversely, high popularity does not guarantee that a particular file is harmless.
Be more cautious with shared or imported modpacks
A file imported into an official client may not have had the same checks as a direct download from that platform. CurseForge says it scans files downloaded directly through its app or website for malware and malicious code, but cannot scan or verify modpack files sent by friends and imported through the app in the same way. Before importing a ZIP-based profile or other shared archive, look for warning signs such as oddly named JARs, unexpected executables, or overrides that appear unrelated to the pack. Be especially cautious if someone pressures you to join a server immediately, says the download is required, directs you to install outside the platform, or uses urgency to discourage questions.
Respond carefully to antivirus warnings
Some mod files can trigger false positives because their structure or behavior resembles malware. That possibility does not make a warning safe to ignore. Compare the platform’s file-level status, any available scan report, the file’s history, and the contents you expected from its instructions. Don’t disable protection or run a flagged file just because the mod is popular or its author says it is safe.

If the platform has quarantined the file, wait for its review or use the platform’s reporting and support process to ask for clarification. A failed or concerning scan is a reason to withhold the file while you investigate; a clean result cannot prove that a file is harmless.

Stop using the affected file and follow current guidance from the relevant platform or a trusted security provider. CurseForge’s advice for its June 2023 malware incident was to run its detection tool and, if an infection was found, use additional independent malware scans and change important passwords. That was incident-specific guidance, not a guarantee that those steps address every infection: CurseForge’s June 2023 infected-mods guidance.

Compare download options before deciding

These differences help you judge risk; none proves that a file is safe. Platform checks are also platform-specific: the documented Nexus Mods and CurseForge workflows do not establish a universal safety score for every game, mod format, or download source. CurseForge also documents a project-whitelisting process in which trusted projects can skip moderation; that process is not a universal guarantee for all files: CurseForge’s project-whitelisting guidance.
