The built-in display on a MacBook Pro is not a touchscreen, so tapping it does not control macOS—and there is no touchscreen-tap setting to disable. To keep the screen clean, shut down and unplug the Mac, then wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water. Apple permits 70% isopropyl alcohol on a cloth for stubborn fingerprints or smudges.
Does a MacBook Pro have a touchscreen?
No. Apple’s MacBook Pro product information describes navigation using the trackpad, keyboard, and macOS controls; it does not describe the built-in display as touch-enabled. A finger tap on that display is therefore not recognized as touchscreen input. There is no built-in touchscreen-tap setting to turn off.
This applies to the built-in display, not separate accessories. In a May 2026 report, Tom’s Guide described an external snap-on touchscreen accessory called the Intricuit Magic Screen; the article said its official retail price was unconfirmed and that it was going through Kickstarter first. That is an accessory report, not an Apple feature or cleaning requirement.
How to clean a MacBook Pro display
- Shut down the Mac and unplug the power adapter. Apple gives this as the first step for cleaning a MacBook screen.
- For routine cleaning, use water. Dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with water and gently wipe the display. A clean microfiber cloth is one suitable option if it is soft and lint-free.
- For stubborn fingerprints or smudges, use Apple’s specified alternative. Moisten a cloth with 70% isopropyl alcohol solution and gently wipe the display.
These steps follow Apple Support’s “How to clean your Apple products” guidance. Do not spray liquid directly onto the computer; keep moisture away from openings.

What not to use on the screen
- Do not spray any liquid directly onto the MacBook Pro.
- Avoid aerosol sprays, solvents, and abrasive materials.
- Do not use cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide.
If your MacBook Pro has a nano-texture display
Use Apple’s separate instructions for a nano-texture display rather than assuming the general display-cleaning steps apply. Apple provides those directions on its cleaning guidance page.
