Start with the adverse action notice—the letter or message explaining the denial. It should give the main reason or tell you how to request it. If the issuer used a credit report, the notice identifies the reporting company and explains how to request a free copy within 60 days. Check that report for errors, then respond to the reason the issuer actually gave.

1. Read the denial notice and get the specific reason

Save the notice and note the decision date, the reasons listed, and any instructions for requesting a statement of reasons. If the notice says you may request the reasons, make the request within 60 days. Under Regulation B, a creditor must provide the principal reasons for its decision or explain how to obtain them. A vague statement that you did not meet the creditor’s internal standards is not a substitute for specific reasons tied to the factors actually considered or scored. CFPB Regulation B § 1002.9.

The notice may cite factors such as limited credit experience, delinquent obligations, obligations that are high relative to income, or inability to verify employment or income. These are examples, not a diagnosis of your application; use the reason in your own notice to decide what to check next. CFPB guidance on credit application denials.

2. Get and review the credit report, if the issuer used one

If the decision was based on a credit report, the adverse action notice must identify the consumer reporting company and explain your right to request a free copy. Follow the notice’s instructions and request it within 60 days of receiving the notice. This is the report associated with the denial; do not assume a report from another service is identical. Check that the personal details are yours and review account history for information that is unfamiliar, inaccurate, or incomplete. Compare the report with your own account records and payment history. Keep a copy of the notice and report so you can refer to the specific item if you need to challenge it.

3. Dispute errors with the companies involved

If you find inaccurate information, dispute it with both the credit reporting company and the company that supplied the information, such as a lender or card issuer. Describe the item and why it is wrong, and include relevant supporting documents. Keep copies of your dispute and any response. The CFPB says the reporting company must investigate and correct errors it finds. CFPB guidance on denials and credit-report errors.

A dispute addresses the accuracy of the report; it does not automatically reverse the card decision. Once an error is resolved, ask the issuer whether it will reconsider the application or whether you would need to submit a new one. The available sources do not establish that every issuer offers reconsideration.

4. Match your next step to the reason given

If your credit file is limited

A notice citing insufficient credit experience points to a thin credit file, not necessarily a reporting error. The CFPB offers credit-building guidance. Review it and focus on building a record that accurately reflects how you manage credit.

If the notice cites missed payments or high obligations

Check whether the cited accounts and balances are accurate. If they are, the notice is identifying a factor the issuer considered; correcting a reporting error or changing your finances may address that factor, but neither action guarantees approval on a future application.

If the issuer could not verify information

Check whether the employment, income, or other application details you submitted were complete and accurate. Ask the issuer what information it could not verify and what documentation, if any, it accepts. Do not send sensitive documents through an unverified channel.

5. Consider whether discrimination may have played a role

A denial by itself does not prove discrimination. But the CFPB identifies warning signs that may warrant attention, including being denied without a reason or a way to learn the reason, being discouraged from applying, or being treated differently in the application process. ECOA prohibits discrimination on specified grounds in credit decisions, while still allowing issuers to apply their credit standards; it does not guarantee approval. See the CFPB’s guidance on information card issuers may not use and steps to take if you think a lender discriminated.

If you have a concern, keep the notice and records of relevant communications, review the CFPB’s fair-lending guidance, and consider submitting a complaint through the CFPB’s complaint resources.
