Some players prefer Classic’s old graphics because they see them as part of the game’s identity and atmosphere—not simply as lower-resolution versions of newer art. That preference is real, but it is not universal: players disagree, and the available sources do not establish how many prefer old visuals.
Why Classic’s old graphics feel like part of the game
For many Classic players, the appeal is not limited to character models. Blizzard’s account of restoring World of Warcraft Classic said the goal was an authentic experience that still looked and felt like playing World of Warcraft in 2006. Rebuilding that experience meant fitting older terrain and art data into a modern game system; Blizzard noted that the relationship between data, source code, and assets affected terrain, gameplay, animations, and lighting.
Blizzard’s Classic team later put the broader design aim plainly: “Many players today choose to play Classic WoW because they love that feel, and don’t want it to be lost.” The 2022 design update discusses the game’s overall feel, including social experiences—not graphics alone. So the old look can matter as one element of a larger sense of continuity.
What players mean by “old graphics”
“Update Classic Graphics” and “old graphics” are familiar ways players frame the debate, but “better” can mean different things. A useful comparison separates visual fidelity from style and atmosphere:

- Resolution and detail: Older assets have a different level of detail from newer HD models.
- Style and continuity: A model can be more detailed yet feel less consistent with the visual language of Classic.
- Atmosphere and memory: Some players connect the old look with Classic’s feel or their own history with the game.
- Choice and consistency: Players may care whether a visual setting applies coherently across characters and animations.
These are ways to understand the disagreement, not objective scores or priorities shared by every player.
Why players disagree about updating Classic’s visuals
A 2019 Blizzard-hosted “Update Classic Graphics” discussion shows the range of views: participants praise Classic’s old models and art style, ask for updated graphics, and dispute whether the older look is “timeless.” The thread illustrates how players talk about the issue; it is not a representative poll.

The audience for WoW: Forever may also include people dissatisfied with changes beyond art. GamesRadar quoted world builder Matthew Armstrong describing the project as aimed at Classic gamers and people who left over changes to art style, story, social aspects, game design, or favorite classes. That is Armstrong’s description of the intended audience, not a measurement of why players leave or return.
What WoW: Forever’s reported visual options mean
A transcript of a BlizzCon 2026 panel reports that WoW: Forever offers a unified setting for HD or SD character models, and that Classic animations were restored across HD character models. This is reported panel information from a secondary transcript, rather than confirmation from official product documentation. If accurate, the options make visual choice part of the conversation: players can favor updated models without necessarily giving up the animations associated with Classic.

A setting for character models does not, by itself, establish that every part of the game’s graphics can be switched between old and new versions. The reported details concern character models and animations.

No representative statistic in the available sources measures how many WoW players prefer legacy graphics. Forum posts show individual opinions, not their prevalence. PC Gamer’s September 21, 2026 report discusses beta interest and quotes a designer on the scale of that interest, but it does not quantify preferences for old visuals. It would be inaccurate to turn either forum discussion or beta activity into a percentage.
