A 404 for a page that was deliberately removed may be correct; a server outage, broken redirect, or accidental crawl block usually needs attention.
What to check before fixing a reported URL
Open Search Console and go to Indexing > Pages (the Page indexing report). Select the reported reason and review its affected examples. A status label is a clue, not proof that every URL needs repair: decide whether each URL should exist, be crawlable, and be indexed. A redirecting source URL, for example, is normally not indexed because Google should use the destination instead.
- Inspect a specific URL: Use the URL Inspection tool to see what Google knows about it. Run a live test to check whether the problem still occurs now; the result may differ from Google’s recorded crawl.
- Check the broader pattern: If several URLs show server, DNS, or timeout problems, open Settings > Crawl stats and look at host availability and response timing. Crawl Stats groups requests; its percentages refer to requests, not unique URLs.
- Apply the matching fix: Correct the site configuration, page response, or infrastructure issue rather than trying to make every report line disappear.
- Ask Google to recheck: Where offered, select Validate Fix on the issue details page. For a repaired individual URL, URL Inspection also offers Request Indexing. These actions request a recheck; they do not guarantee immediate crawling or indexing.
The live test is useful for current accessibility but does not cover every report condition, including duplicate and canonical conditions. A successful live test therefore does not by itself explain or clear every Page indexing status. See Google’s URL Inspection documentation and Page indexing report guidance.
Fix the error that matches the report
404 (Not Found)
First decide whether the URL ought to lead to a page. If it was submitted in a sitemap or intended for indexing, correct the URL or remove the stale sitemap entry. If its content moved, redirect it to the relevant replacement. If it was permanently removed and has no equivalent, return a genuine 404 or 410 response.

A 404 is generally appropriate for a URL that never existed and is not linked from your site. Fix broken internal links or common URL misspellings when useful, but do not redirect every missing URL to the homepage, invent replacement content, or block 404 URLs in robots.txt. Those approaches can hide whether a page is actually gone. Google’s Page indexing report guidance explains how to interpret not-found URLs.
Server errors (5xx), DNS failures, and timeouts
A 5xx status means Google received a server error, but the failure may have been temporary. Compare the reported crawl with current availability and your server logs; a live test that succeeds now does not show that the earlier fetch succeeded.

For a pattern affecting multiple URLs, review Crawl Stats host availability and response time. Investigate server capacity, slow responses, application or dynamic-request load, DNS resolution and routing, firewall rules, and blocks imposed by your hosting provider. Also check robots.txt availability: Google may delay crawling if it cannot retrieve the file. A robots.txt request returning 404 is different from a file that is unreachable or times out. Google’s guidance on Page indexing, Crawl Stats, and robots.txt errors covers these distinctions.
Redirect errors
Search Console can report redirect errors when a chain is too long, a loop occurs, the redirect URL is excessively long, or the destination is empty or invalid. Trace the affected URL’s redirects with a web debugging tool such as Lighthouse, then correct the destination or shorten and repair the chain.

If the redirect works, the source URL is not the page Google should index. Inspect the target URL separately to check its own accessibility and indexing status.
Blocked by robots.txt or marked noindex
These mechanisms do different jobs:
- robots.txt controls crawling. If a page that should be crawled is blocked, check the specific rule with URL Inspection or a robots.txt validator and remove or narrow the unintended block.
- noindex controls indexing. If you want Google to keep a page out of Search, allow Google to crawl it so it can read the noindex meta tag or HTTP header. A robots.txt block is not a reliable way to keep a known URL out of the index.
If a page should be indexed but has an unintended noindex directive, remove it from the page or response header and retest. Google’s robots.txt guidance explains the crawl-block distinction.

Soft 404
A soft 404 is a page that looks like a not-found page but does not return an appropriate not-found status. If the content is genuinely missing, return 404. If the URL is a real page, provide substantive content and return an appropriate successful response rather than presenting an empty or error-like page as though it were valid content.

If you cannot find a URL in an error group, inspect it directly with URL Inspection. Google may not have discovered it, it may be behind a login, it may carry a noindex directive, or it may have been indexed recently and not yet appeared in the report. A live test helps assess current access, but Google does not guarantee that every page will be indexed. The URL Inspection documentation describes what the tool can tell you about an individual URL.

How to tell whether the fix worked
After changing the site, test the affected URL again and confirm the intended response: a replacement page should load, a removed page should return 404 or 410, a redirect should reach the relevant destination, and an intended-to-be-indexed page should not be blocked or carry an unintended noindex directive. Use Validate Fix for the reported issue when available, or request indexing for an individual repaired URL. Search Console’s status may take time to reflect a new crawl, and a request to recheck is not a promise of indexing.
