Before trying to fix a corrupted hard drive, protect any files you can still access and check for signs of physical failure. For a healthy drive with a Windows file-system problem, CHKDSK may repair errors. It cannot fix failing hardware. If the drive clicks, grinds, reports a SMART failure, or fails its manufacturer’s diagnostic, stop repair attempts if the data matters and seek recovery advice.
First identify what is actually wrong
“Corrupted hard drive” can describe several different problems. The right next step depends on whether the disk is detected, whether files are missing, whether Windows starts, and whether the drive shows physical warning signs.
- Windows detects the drive, but files or folders are inaccessible: this may be a file-system problem, but it does not establish that the hardware is healthy.
- Windows reports the volume as RAW or asks you to format it: do not format the drive if you need its files. Formatting can make recovery harder; focus on recovering the data first.
- Windows itself is malfunctioning or will not start: the issue may be damaged Windows system files or a startup problem rather than corruption of the drive’s file system.
- The drive disappears, reports a SMART warning, fails a manufacturer diagnostic, or makes unusual mechanical sounds: suspect hardware trouble and prioritize data recovery over repair.
These symptoms are clues, not a definitive diagnosis. This guide covers general Windows steps; menu labels and recovery options vary by Windows version. Diagnostics are specific to the drive manufacturer and model. The steps here do not establish universal procedures for macOS, Linux, RAID arrays, encrypted volumes, or every USB enclosure.
Protect files before running repairs
If the drive is readable and has no physical-failure warning signs, copy the most important files to a separate, healthy device before running a repair or recovery action that writes to the affected drive. Do not use the suspect drive itself as the backup destination.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
If the files are irreplaceable and the drive has a SMART warning, has failed a manufacturer test, or is clicking, grinding, or scratching, stop using it and get professional data-recovery advice before running scans or recovery software. Continued operation and repeated troubleshooting may worsen physical damage. Seagate support guidance puts the priority plainly: “If you absolutely need any data on the drive, contact Data Recovery Services immediately before troubleshooting.”
If you are unsure about the drive’s health, consult the manufacturer’s diagnostic instructions for that exact model. If the drive fails its diagnostic and the files are backed up or expendable, replace it rather than trusting it for continued storage.

Choose the step that matches the problem
| What you observe | Likely next step | Data and hardware caution |
|---|---|---|
| Accessible local volume; suspected file-system errors; no physical warning signs | Back up files, then use CHKDSK as appropriate | /f and /r perform repair-related work; neither fixes failing hardware. |
| Windows features malfunction, but the drive appears healthy | Run DISM, then SFC in an elevated Command Prompt | These target the Windows image and protected system files, not physical failure or every file-system problem. |
| Files are missing or deleted | Minimize computer use and consider Windows File Recovery | Recover files to a different drive; success is not guaranteed. |
| Windows will not boot | Use the relevant Windows Recovery Environment option | Back up first where possible; reset or reinstall choices can affect personal files. |
| SMART warning, failed drive diagnostic, or hard clicking, grinding, or scratching | Prioritize recovery advice and replacement planning | If data matters, avoid repeated scans and repair attempts. |
Use CHKDSK for a Windows file-system problem
CHKDSK checks a volume’s file system. It does not repair a physically failing disk. Confirm the correct drive letter before running a command: it can differ in a recovery environment. The examples below use X:; replace it with the letter of the volume you intend to check.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt. Search for Command Prompt and choose the option to run it as administrator.
- For an online NTFS volume, start with a scan:
chkdsk X: /scan. This checks the volume without the repair action requested by/f. - To fix file-system errors it finds, run:
chkdsk X: /f. It may need exclusive access to the volume. If Windows offers to schedule the check for the next restart, confirm the volume letter and that important files are backed up before agreeing. - For a bad-sector scan and an attempt to recover readable information, run:
chkdsk X: /r. It includes the functionality of/fand can take substantial time.
The /r option does not repair physical damage. It looks for bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information. Do not run it as a substitute for backing up a drive with hardware warnings. Avoid interrupting a check once it is running unless there is a compelling reason.

Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
If Windows features are broken but the drive appears healthy, the problem may be corruption in the Windows image or protected operating-system files rather than the drive’s file system. In an elevated Command Prompt, run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow.
These commands address Windows system files; they do not repair a physically failing disk or resolve every type of file-system corruption.

Recover missing files or troubleshoot a PC that will not boot
When files are missing or deleted
Microsoft Windows File Recovery is a command-line option for attempting recovery of files from local drives on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Minimize or avoid using the affected computer: new activity can overwrite data that the system has marked as free space. Save recovered files to a different drive, not the one you are recovering from. No recovery method guarantees success. If the drive shows physical-failure signs or the files are especially valuable, seek specialist advice before trying recovery software.
When Windows will not start
Use Windows Recovery Environment and choose an option that matches the cause of the startup problem. Depending on the Windows version and what is available on the PC, options may include Startup Repair, System Restore, uninstalling a recent update, reset, or reinstall. These actions have different effects; back up files before choosing an option that may affect them.

A clean reinstall from installation media can remove personal files, applications, and settings, including all files on the selected drive. Treat reset and reinstall as disruptive recovery choices, not first-line fixes for an otherwise accessible drive with a file-system error.
When to replace the drive
A drive that reports SMART failure or fails its manufacturer’s diagnostic should not be trusted for continued storage. Back up accessible data promptly if it is safe to do so, then plan to replace the drive. Persistent hard clicking, grinding, or scratching may signal physical trouble; if the data matters, stop troubleshooting and contact a professional recovery service rather than repeatedly powering on or scanning the drive.
Before buying a replacement, check the exact computer model and the existing drive’s interface, physical dimensions, capacity requirements, and system compatibility. A drive that fits one computer may not fit another.
