To fill out a PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader, click and type in its interactive fields. If the PDF has no fields, choose Tools > Fill & Sign and place text or symbols on the page. Save the completed form as a new file so you keep the original.

Identify which kind of PDF form you have

PDF forms work in two main ways. An interactive form has fields you can select; a flat form is simply a page image or document layout with no fields to click. Adobe notes that “Not all forms are fillable” in its Reader form-filling guide.

Form type How to recognize it How to fill it If typing does not work
Interactive Fields can be selected and may highlight when you point to them. Click a field, type, or choose an option. Use Tab to move forward and Shift+Tab to move backward. Check whether the document allows form filling in its security settings.
Flat or non-interactive No fields respond when selected. Use Tools > Fill & Sign to place text and symbols over the page. If it is open in a browser, download it and open it in Reader.

Fill out an interactive PDF form on desktop

  1. Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader. If it opened in a browser, save a copy to your computer and open that file in Reader.
  2. Select a field. Look for highlighted areas or move the pointer over the form to find fields that accept input.
  3. Enter your information. Type into text fields, and select checkboxes, radio buttons, or other controls as appropriate. Press Tab to move forward through fields or Shift+Tab to go back.
  4. Save a separate completed copy. Choose Save As, give the filled form a new filename, and save it where you can find it. Adobe’s desktop instructions describe this workflow.

Fill a flat PDF with Fill & Sign

If clicking the page does not reveal fields, you can overlay your information rather than type into a form field:

  1. Open the PDF in Reader.
  2. Choose Tools > Fill & Sign.
  3. Add text or symbols, then position them over the matching spaces on the page. Adjust their placement or size as needed.
  4. Save the completed PDF.

A browser’s built-in PDF viewer may not provide the same workflow. For a non-interactive form displayed in a browser, save the PDF locally and open it directly in Reader before using Fill & Sign.

Why can’t I type into the PDF?

Start by checking whether the document has interactive fields. If none respond, the form may be flat; use Fill & Sign to add text on top of the page. If the form has fields but Reader blocks input, check the document’s permissions.

  1. Open the PDF’s Document Properties and select the Security tab.
  2. Check whether filling form fields is permitted.
  3. If filling is restricted, contact the document’s creator and request an unrestricted copy.

Adobe’s troubleshooting guide covers form permissions and platform-specific ways to inspect them.

Fill and sign a PDF on a phone or tablet

Adobe’s mobile guidance supports filling and signing Acroforms and Fill & Sign forms, including offline workflows. Acrobat mobile does not support XFA forms. See Adobe’s pages on filling and signing on mobile and mobile PDF forms.

On mobile, you can enter text, add checkmarks, and place a signature. A finger is enough to write a signature; a stylus is optional. Review the form before saving: Adobe says saving a signed form flattens the PDF, and the signature cannot be removed afterward.

Do you need an Acrobat upgrade?

No paid upgrade is needed for the basic task of filling a form in Reader. Adobe’s Reader FAQ describes typing into fillable forms, using Fill & Sign on simple PDFs without optimized fields, and saving changes. Creating or converting a flat document into an interactive form is a separate form-authoring task, not required to complete the form yourself.
