If Chrome is running slowly, start with the low-risk fixes: update the browser, close tabs you do not need, and check whether an extension or a single tab is consuming resources. If the problem continues, use Chrome’s built-in performance settings and diagnostics to distinguish a browser issue from a slow website, network, or computer.
Start with the quickest fixes
- Update Chrome. On desktop, open Help → About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates on that page; relaunch if it offers an update. Google says Chrome works best on its latest version. Google Chrome Help: Speed up Google Chrome.
- Close tabs you are not using. Each open tab adds work for Chrome. As Google puts it, “The more tabs you have open, the harder Chrome has to work.” Close unneeded tabs, then check whether the pages you use respond better. Google Chrome Help: Speed up Google Chrome.
- Reduce other active apps. If several demanding apps are open, close the ones you do not need while testing Chrome. This helps determine whether the slowdown is tied to overall computer workload.
Find out whether a tab or extension is using resources
Check Chrome Task Manager
On desktop, open Chrome’s Task Manager from the browser menu (More → More tools → Task Manager). Sort by Memory footprint or CPU to see which tabs, extensions, or background pages are using the most resources. A large value is a clue to investigate, not by itself proof that a task is faulty. Save any work before ending a task: doing so can close a page and lose unsaved changes. Google Chrome Help: Speed up Google Chrome.
Test extensions selectively
Turn off extensions you do not need and see whether the slowdown changes. If it does, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify a possible contributor; remove only extensions you no longer want. This is more informative than disabling everything indefinitely. Google’s speed guidance recommends turning off or removing unnecessary extensions. Google Chrome Help: Speed up Google Chrome.
Review Chrome’s performance settings
Use Memory Saver if you keep many tabs open
On desktop, open More → Settings → Performance and review Memory Saver. When enabled, it deactivates tabs you are not currently using to free computer memory, which can help active tabs run smoothly. A tab may need to reload when you return to it. These personalization options described by Google do not apply to Chrome on iOS or Android. Google Chrome Help: Customize performance settings.

Treat page preloading as a preference, not a universal fix
Chrome’s performance settings also include page preloading. Google describes preloading as a way to make browsing and searching faster, so consider your preference and the symptoms rather than turning it off automatically as a speed fix. Google Chrome Help: Speed up Google Chrome.
Use the pattern of the slowdown to narrow the cause

Google’s diagnostic guidance describes several possible resource bottlenecks: the main Chrome process can be affected by slow disk access or insufficient system memory; a renderer may be busy because of a poorly programmed web app; and graphics-process slowdown can relate to a graphics-card driver or graphics-intensive content. Try a settings reset only after simpler checks
If updating, reducing active work, checking extensions, and reviewing performance settings have not helped, restoring Chrome’s settings to their defaults is a later option. A reset changes settings such as the homepage and startup tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. Google says bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed. For loading errors, first distinguish a single-site problem from a broader connection problem. Google recommends reloading, checking the internet connection, closing tabs and stopping unnecessary tasks to free memory, and resetting Chrome settings if earlier steps fail. Keep the troubleshooting targeted: if one site is affected, investigate that page; if many sites are affected, check the connection and computer workload; if a particular process dominates resources, test that tab or extension. The available evidence does not establish one universal cause or guaranteed fix for every slow Chrome setup.
