Quantum noise is an unwanted disturbance that changes how a quantum state evolves; an error is the resulting effect on the information a computer processes or a communication system sends. Noise can come from a qubit’s surroundings, imperfect controls, or hardware variation. Quantum computers and networks manage it with different combinations of careful design, noise modeling, mitigation, and error correction.

Noise is the disturbance; an error is its effect

A quantum state may evolve continuously as it interacts with its environment or as control signals act on it. If that evolution differs from the intended one, the state can carry altered information or produce an unreliable measurement. IBM Quantum Learning makes the useful distinction between noise—the underlying disturbance—and errors, the resulting deviations in quantum information.

A qubit is vulnerable because its useful properties include superposition and entanglement, which can be disrupted by unwanted interactions. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) identifies stray electric or magnetic fields, temperature fluctuations, and cosmic rays as possible disturbances. In NIST’s words, “Qubits are exquisite but fragile.”

Noise is not always a literal, isolated bit flip. The underlying change may be continuous; researchers often group its effects into categories to model, measure, and address them.

What quantum noise does to a computer

A quantum circuit is designed to transform qubits in a particular way. Noise can alter that transformation, so the final state—and therefore the measurement results—may differ from what the circuit was meant to produce. The result is reduced reliability, not necessarily a visibly broken device: an individual run can still produce a plausible-looking answer.

Potential sources include coupling to the environment, imperfect control operations, and hardware defects. A mathematical description called a quantum channel represents an allowed transformation of quantum states. Channels can describe ideal unitary evolution as well as probabilistic mixtures, measurement, decoherence, amplitude damping, and dephasing. They provide a framework for describing what happens to a state; they do not imply that all noise comes from the same physical mechanism.

Common noise effects

  • Bit flips: the state’s computational-basis value changes, analogous in a simple model to 0 becoming 1 or 1 becoming 0.
  • Phase changes and dephasing: the relative phase between parts of a superposition changes or becomes less well-defined, which can spoil interference even when a simple bit value does not flip.
  • Amplitude damping: a model of energy loss from an excited state, such as relaxation toward a lower-energy state.
  • Thermal relaxation: a model that accounts for relaxation and loss of coherence over time. IBM’s software documentation parameterizes its thermal-relaxation model using the relaxation times T1 and T2, gate time, and excited-state thermal population.

These categories are tools for analysis, not a claim that a physical disturbance always acts as one clean, discrete event. IBM’s documentation includes general Kraus channels, mixed-unitary and coherent errors, Pauli and depolarizing channels, reset errors, thermal relaxation, and amplitude or phase damping. Which model is useful depends on the mechanism and hardware being described; no single model should be assumed to represent every device.

How researchers manage noise in quantum computers

Noise management spans several layers. Hardware and control design aim to limit disturbances; error suppression and mitigation aim to reduce their influence; quantum error correction encodes information so faults can be detected and corrected. These approaches have different requirements and resource costs, and they do not all serve the same purpose.

Approach What it does Typical aim Important trade-off
Hardware and control design Seeks to reduce disturbances or control imperfections at their source. Make the physical operations and states more reliable. Effectiveness depends on the hardware and disturbance; it does not make noise models or correction unnecessary by definition.
Error suppression Uses design or operating choices intended to limit noise’s effect. Reduce the impact of noise on a computation. Methods rely on assumptions about the system and may require additional control resources.
Error mitigation Reduces noise’s influence on estimated results. Improve estimates for a particular computation. It is not the same as detecting and correcting every fault in encoded quantum information.
Quantum error correction Encodes information so faults can be detected and corrected. Support reliable, potentially fault-tolerant operation. Requires encoding and additional resources; performance depends on the error processes and code assumptions.

Model choice matters because a mitigation or correction strategy must address the error behavior it actually encounters. For a practical comparison, ask what each method suppresses, estimates, detects, or corrects; what noise assumptions it needs; what extra hardware or circuit resources it uses; and whether the goal is a better estimate for one computation or scalable fault-tolerant operation.

Why an old threshold is not a current device benchmark

A NIST publication record of Emanuel H. Knill’s 2005 work reports a theoretical threshold for independent errors “well above 3%.” That result is assumption-dependent and historical: the same account warns that required resources become excessive at high error probabilities and fall rapidly as error rates decrease. It is not a universal threshold for today’s hardware, nor a statement of current device error rates.

How noise affects quantum communication

Quantum communication sends physical carriers that can hold superpositions and entanglement. During transmission, a carrier can be lost or its quantum state can be disturbed. Loss is not just the classical equivalent of a weak signal: an unknown arbitrary qubit cannot be perfectly duplicated, so an ordinary copying amplifier cannot simply read and reproduce it to restore the message.

NIST describes quantum networks as requiring specialized infrastructure and coordination. Depending on the system, this can include nonclassical-light sources, single-photon detectors, quantum memories and repeaters, transducers, and auxiliary protocols for tasks such as error correction and synchronization.

What a quantum network has to manage

  • Loss handling: account for carriers that do not arrive, rather than assuming they can be copied and amplified like classical data.
  • State preservation: limit or detect changes that damage the superposition or entanglement needed by the protocol.
  • Storage and relaying: use quantum memories and repeaters where the network design requires them.
  • Detection and coordination: rely on suitable detectors and synchronization or other control protocols to coordinate network operations.

Quantum communication is not automatically secure simply because it uses quantum states. Security depends on the protocol and its implementation. NIST describes channel monitoring for eavesdropping as an application, but that does not establish that every quantum communication system is secure.

For readers ready for a technical reference, Cambridge University Press lists Michael A. Nielsen and Isaac L. Chuang’s Quantum Computation and Quantum Information, 10th Anniversary Edition. It treats quantum noise and quantum operations separately from quantum error correction, making it an advanced reference rather than a beginner’s introduction.
