Back up any important files you can still access before you scan or attempt a repair. A disk check or manufacturer repair tool may help mark a sector unusable or prompt the drive to replace it with a spare, but it cannot restore data that is already unreadable. If critical files are inaccessible and you have no backup, prioritize recovery advice over repair attempts.

First decide: save the files or repair the drive?

If important files are accessible but not backed up, copy them to another storage device first. Do not treat the suspect drive as the only copy while you troubleshoot it.

If essential files are already inaccessible and no backup exists, do not run a sector-repair operation as a way to recover them. Seagate advises contacting its recovery department when unbacked data cannot be lost, while warning that data in an unreadable sector cannot be recovered in the described scenario: Seagate’s bad-sector guidance.

Understand what a bad-sector repair can—and cannot—do

A sector is a small area of storage on a drive. A disk check and a drive-maker diagnostic are different tools: a filesystem check can address filesystem or sector-marking issues, while a manufacturer utility tests the drive and may offer a repair action. Neither should be treated as a guarantee that failing hardware is healthy.

Seagate explains that its drives may reallocate a problematic sector to a spare. If the original sector is readable, its data may be transferred; if it is unreadable, Seagate’s SeaTools for Windows guide states: “When the sector is bad and unreadable then any data in it is already lost.” A SeaTools repair action may write a zero pattern when authorized, prompting drive firmware to retire the sector and activate a spare. These are Seagate’s descriptions of its tools and drive behavior, not a promise that every brand or drive can be repaired: SeaTools for Windows guide.

Use this safe troubleshooting sequence

  1. Back up accessible files. Copy them to another storage device. If you have no backup destination, arrange one before attempting repairs. A backup protects the copied files; it does not fix the suspect drive.
  2. Identify the drive maker and find its diagnostic. Use the utility offered for your drive when available, and confirm the tool supports that drive. Seagate provides SeaTools downloads for Windows, Linux, and bootable use: SeaTools downloads.
  3. Run a diagnostic scan and note its result. SeaTools distinguishes scanning from its Fix All repair attempts, and its Windows guide describes scanning without attempting repair. Read the prompts and warnings before choosing a repair action. A passing scan is a result at the time of the test, not proof of future reliability.
  4. Consider a filesystem check for filesystem-related problems. Seagate identifies Windows Check Disk (ChkDsk) as a utility that can repair bad sectors: Seagate’s Check Disk guidance. A completed check does not establish that physically failing hardware is healthy. Use the instructions for your Windows version rather than relying on generic command syntax.
  5. Attempt repair only after weighing the data risk. Follow the drive maker’s instructions, and proceed only if your accessible files are backed up and you accept that unreadable data may be lost. For Seagate drives, consult its SeaTools repair instructions.
  6. Act on a failure result. If SeaTools reports a failure or cannot repair the sectors, Seagate recommends checking the drive’s warranty status. Contact the manufacturer about warranty options, replace the drive if appropriate, or seek recovery advice if files remain the priority: Seagate warranty and replacements.

Choose the next step based on your situation

Situation Best next step Important limit
Important files are accessible but not backed up Copy them to another storage device before testing or repair. A repair attempt is not a substitute for a backup.
Critical files are inaccessible and unbacked Pause repair attempts and contact a recovery service or the manufacturer’s recovery department. Recovery is not guaranteed; Seagate says unreadable-sector data cannot be recovered in the described scenario.
You suspect a filesystem issue Use the operating system’s disk-check guidance for your version. A filesystem check does not prove the drive hardware is sound.
You need to assess drive health Run a diagnostic from the drive maker, if one supports your drive. Tool availability and repair behavior vary by manufacturer.
A manufacturer diagnostic fails or cannot repair the issue Check warranty status and plan for replacement; seek recovery help first if data is the priority. A replacement restores storage capacity, not files already lost from unreadable sectors.

When to stop using the drive

Stop treating the drive as reliable if a diagnostic reports failure or a repair attempt cannot resolve the reported sectors. Preserve any remaining accessible files, check warranty or replacement options, and keep the drive out of service for important storage until you have a dependable replacement. Do not infer a repair success rate or long-term health from a single completed scan.
