Export a sequence from Premiere Pro
- Select the sequence. Click the sequence you want to render in the Timeline panel. Confirm it is the intended edit before opening Export.
- Open Export. Choose File > Export > Media, or use Ctrl+M on Windows and Command+M on macOS.
- Choose where the video will go. Select a local media file or a publishing destination available in your version of Premiere. Adobe’s current walkthrough describes publishing to YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and TikTok; available integrations and labels can change.
- Name the file and set its destination. Choose the output filename and folder. Make sure the destination has enough free disk space for the exported file.
- Choose a format and preset. For many online videos, Adobe recommends H.264. Its convenient starting preset, Match Source – Adaptive High Bitrate, matches the sequence’s frame size and frame rate and adjusts bitrate based on frame size. Use a recipient’s required settings instead if they have provided a delivery specification.
- Check the preview and output range. Scrub through the preview and verify duration and framing, particularly when the output frame size differs from the sequence.
- Render or queue the export. Click Export to render from Premiere. Choose Send to Media Encoder to queue the job and keep working in Premiere; Adobe recommends this option for longer jobs or when you want to continue editing.
Choose export settings that match the delivery
A preset is a starting point, not a substitute for the recipient’s requirements. If a client or platform specifies a codec, frame size, frame rate, bitrate, color space or audio layout, follow that specification. Otherwise, check the following settings before exporting.
Format and container
Choose the format in Export settings. Adobe gives H.264 for MP4 and QuickTime for MOV as examples. The file extension alone does not ensure that two exports have the same codec or other technical settings, so confirm the format and settings the receiver expects.
Match Source, frame size and frame rate
Match Source copies source properties where supported; if an exact match is unsupported, Premiere uses the closest available match. Adaptive H.264 Match Source presets match most source properties and adjust bitrate based on frame size. Verify the intended frame size and frame rate for the delivery. Adobe notes that changing frame rate from the source can cause unwanted motion artifacts.

Also check the scan setting. Adobe identifies progressive video as preferred for digital television, online content and film. Check the aspect ratio and pixel aspect ratio as well: a pixel aspect ratio that differs from the source can distort the picture.
Audio
Check the channel layout, sample rate and bitrate against the delivery needs. Adobe’s export guidance identifies stereo or multichannel audio, 48 kHz and appropriate kbps values as considerations, not a requirement to convert every source to 48 kHz.

Encoding performance
Hardware Encoding is the default for H.264 and HEVC when the system supports the requested settings. Hardware acceleration depends on system configuration; Premiere may switch to Software Encoding if the chosen settings are unsupported.
Color and HDR
Rec. 709 is the default export color space for most presets. Other color-space options depend on the selected format and profile. HDR delivery requires deliberate settings, so do not assume an SDR H.264 preset is appropriate for HDR.

Export directly or use Media Encoder?

Both choices start from the selected sequence and its export settings. Choose based on whether you need to keep working while the render runs.

Adobe’s troubleshooting guidance, updated March 5, 2026, recommends diagnostic changes rather than promising one universal fix. Try a simpler export and change one factor at a time so you can identify what is involved.

- Try another supported format. This can help determine whether the problem is tied to the selected format or its settings.
- Switch to a built-in preset. If you are using a custom preset, test with a built-in one to isolate a custom-setting issue.
- Disable hardware-accelerated decoding for H.264/HEVC. Adobe includes this as a troubleshooting step; changing it requires restarting Premiere.
- Queue the job through Media Encoder. Adobe recommends trying this workflow when an export fails or hangs.
- Test without third-party transitions or plugins. Temporarily remove them to check whether an effect or plugin is involved.
- Consider Mercury Playback Engine Software Only where available. Adobe suggests this for applicable systems, but warns it may slow rendering. The option is unavailable on Apple Silicon Macs.
These steps are ways to isolate a failure, not guaranteed fixes. If the render still fails, return to the original settings after each test and note which change affects the result.
