Usually, no. DirectStorage and faster SSDs can help games read and stream data, but shader-compilation stutter occurs when a game compiles shaders on your PC. That is a different task. A faster drive may shorten storage-bound loading; it is not a general fix for hitches caused by shader compilation.
Why storage speed usually does not fix shader-compilation stutter
DirectStorage is a game technology for reading data from high-speed storage, such as an NVMe SSD, with less CPU overhead. Microsoft describes it as an I/O feature—not a shader compiler. Whether a game uses DirectStorage depends on the game; it is not a global Windows switch you can turn on to eliminate shader hitches. Microsoft’s DirectStorage documentation
Shader compilation is separate work: the game or graphics driver prepares shader programs for the GPU. When a game compiles shaders at launch or just before they are needed during play, that work can cause longer loading and visible hitches. Microsoft specifically identifies in-game shader-compilation stutter as a consequence of compiling shaders on the player’s device. Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery overview
An SSD upgrade is relevant if storage reads are limiting a game’s loading or asset streaming. It does not, by itself, move shader compilation off the player’s device or prevent the game from doing that work. The available Microsoft documentation does not establish a general reduction in shader-compilation stutter from switching to a faster drive, nor does it provide a percentage improvement to expect.

What can help, and when
| Technology | Work it targets | When it may help | What support it depends on |
|---|---|---|---|
| DirectStorage | Game-data reads from high-speed storage, with reduced CPU overhead. | Loading or asset streaming when data I/O is a bottleneck; it is not documented as a shader-compilation fix. | The game must use the technology. |
| Faster SSD | Reading game files and other stored data. | Storage-bound loading or streaming, not shader compilation as a general rule. | The drive, game, and workload; no universal shader-stutter improvement is established. |
| Driver shader cache | Saving compiled shaders to a disk cache so supported applications may use them on later runs. | Potentially later runs, if the driver and application support and use the cache. | Graphics-driver support and implementation; behavior is not guaranteed to be identical across games, APIs, and drivers. |
| Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) | Precompiling shaders and delivering compiled shader data rather than requiring all compilation on the player’s device. | When a supported game and storefront provide the prepared shader database. | A supported Windows version, ASD-capable GPU and driver, and storefront integration. |
Microsoft describes ASD as a developer and storefront workflow: a State Object Database is prepared, compiled into a Precompiled Shader Database for testing, and deployed through a storefront. It is not a setting a player can enable to make any game precompile its shaders. ASD overview and ASD in the GDK
For shader-cache behavior, Microsoft’s D3D11 reference describes driver support for an OS-managed disk cache of compiled shaders that can accelerate future application runs. The benefit is conditional: the reference does not promise the same cache behavior for every game, graphics API, or driver. D3D11 shader-cache support flags

How to decide whether an SSD upgrade is relevant
- Consider storage as a cause if the problem is slow loading or delayed asset streaming and the game appears to be waiting on data reads. A faster SSD can be useful for that kind of bottleneck.
- Do not assume storage is the cause just because a hitch happens in a game installed on a slower drive. A hitch that coincides with shader compilation points to shader work, though the timing alone does not prove the cause of an individual stutter.
- Do not buy an NVMe SSD solely to cure shader-compilation stutter. The cited documentation does not establish that upgrade as a general remedy or quantify an expected reduction.
- Look for game-side shader handling such as precompilation or shader delivery, and allow the graphics driver’s supported cache to operate normally. Availability and behavior depend on the game and its platform support.
Microsoft also cautions developers that forcing file buffering can reduce performance on high-speed drives when BypassIO is disabled. That is developer-facing configuration guidance, not a user tweak for shader stutter. Microsoft’s storage performance guidance

It is designed to make game-data reads from high-speed storage more efficient, so it can be relevant to loading and asset streaming in games that use it. That is distinct from shader compilation: improved data I/O does not mean the game has precompiled its shaders or eliminated compilation hitches.
