In Gears of War: E-Day, use cover as the framework for combat: identify your next protected position, move there with a purpose, and fire from angles that keep you out of open lanes. The game adds more ways to traverse and use cover, but that does not make charging across exposed ground a sound default. These beginner tips draw on official developer and Xbox materials reviewed October 7, 2026; they are principles, not a tested build or a weapon ranking.
How do I use cover in Gears of War: E-Day?
Cover is more than a place to pause and shoot from. It shapes where you move and when you have an opening to fire. Before leaving protection, look for the next usable position and consider how you will reach it. The Coalition describes reading the combat space and its cover layout as central across Campaign, Horde, and Versus; choosing a route before moving is a practical way to apply that idea, not a guarantee for every encounter. The official gameplay update explains how cover remains a combat pillar even as the options expand.
Choose cover for the situation
E-Day includes a wider variety of cover types and heights than the older formula. Lower cover can help when taller protection is unavailable, but it is a trade-off: The Coalition says the character moves more slowly and is somewhat more exposed in low-ground cover. Use it with that limitation in mind rather than treating every piece of cover as equally safe.
What should I do when my cover gets destroyed?
If gunfire tears away the upper half of your protection, the character can drop prone. Treat that as a changed position, not as proof that the remaining cover will keep you safe indefinitely: reassess your exposure and look for a better route or another position. The official description establishes the prone response, but does not prescribe a single best reaction for every fight.

What is the best way to move between cover?
Use movement options to improve your position or change your angle, rather than moving just because you can. Xbox describes E-Day’s movement as modernized, with more freedom and verticality; launch materials specifically name jumping, vaulting, sliding, and flanking. These options can help you cross obstacles or approach cover from a different direction. Before using one, check whether it leads to protection or a useful angle instead of carrying you into an open lane. Xbox Wire’s launch coverage describes the traversal options.
- Spot a destination. Pick the next position that offers protection or a useful firing angle.
- Check the route. Look for exposed ground and obstacles before you leave your current position.
- Choose a traversal option for a reason. Jump, vault, slide, or flank when it helps you reach that destination or alter your angle; do not treat these moves as a substitute for cover.
- Reassess after moving. Once you arrive, read the updated battlefield and identify the next position before committing again.
How does active reload work?
Active reload affects the outcome of a reload: the official developer explanation notes the possibility of a jam or extra damage. The indicator sits just below the reticle by default. If you prefer the older upper-right placement, you can move it in settings. For a new player, the practical approach is to learn the timing when the pressure is lower and keep an eye on the indicator; trying for an active reload during incoming fire is not automatically worth the risk. How should I adapt to Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus?
The modes have different objectives, so a tactic that fits one may not fit another. The official Xbox descriptions distinguish story progression, cooperative wave survival, and competitive player-versus-player combat. Horde Siege also uses mission modifiers that can change how a wave plays. The official multiplayer overview describes the mode and its conditions.

The official descriptions do not establish a universal difficulty ranking for these modes. In Horde Siege, read the current condition before settling on a plan: a rule that changes reloads, healing, or enemy deaths can make a familiar approach less useful.

Is there a best weapon for new players?
The official materials say familiar weapons return in reimagined form and that E-Day includes new close-quarters weapons, but they do not provide a reliable weapon-by-weapon comparison of damage, range, or performance by encounter. That means there is no supported universal “best weapon” recommendation here. As general advice rather than an E-Day tier list, carry a weapon suited to the engagement distance you expect and use cover to create opportunities to fire from a sensible range.
