Judge the specific download: get it from the official project page, check its scan status and history, verify its requirements and permissions, and stop if it asks for credentials or performs unexplained actions. A scan badge reduces uncertainty; it cannot guarantee a mod is harmless.
What “safe” means for a game mod
There are several separate questions to answer before installing a mod:
- Malware: Does the file contain harmful code or behave suspiciously?
- Compatibility: Does it support your game version and required dependencies, or could it cause crashes, conflicts, or save problems?
- Rights and disclosure: Does the mod use assets or AI-generated content in a way that follows the platform’s rules and applicable rights?
A mod can pass one check and fail another. A compatibility problem is not proof of malware, and AI disclosure or rights concerns are not the same as file security.
How to evaluate a mod before installing it
- Use the official project page. Avoid relying on an unexplained mirror or repost. Read the description, installation steps, stated features, caveats, and requirements. Nexus Mods requires submitted files to work as described and to present relevant caveats and requirements; CurseForge’s guidelines also require compliance with the game developer’s EULA and terms. - Check the release’s scan status and the project’s recent history. Look at the specific file, author history, downloads, endorsements, and recent reports. A long-standing project with credible history offers useful context, but is not a guarantee that a new release is safe.
- Check what the download contains and what it does. Be cautious if a mod unexpectedly includes an executable, requests account credentials, or connects to the internet without a clear reason. Compare those actions with the mod’s stated purpose and installation instructions.
- Confirm the game version and dependencies. Match the mod’s supported game version to yours and install only the dependencies it explicitly requires. A mismatch can cause crashes or conflicts even when the file is not malicious.
- Pause at warnings. Do not disable security controls or bypass a platform warning just to proceed. If the file’s purpose, source, or behavior is unclear, do not install it until you can verify those details.
What mod-site scan badges can—and cannot—tell you
Nexus Mods says uploaded files go through multiple security checks and a virus scan before release. Its indicators describe different scan outcomes, not a universal safety certification:

Nexus Mods notes that false positives occur and says a failed or flagged scan does not automatically mean a file is malicious. Its virus-scanning guidance recommends considering the status alongside project activity, downloads, endorsements, and account history.
CurseForge describes using automated checks and manual review, but also documents a June 2023 incident in which malicious accounts uploaded malware. Its incident page records the event and provides detection and remediation guidance. This history is a reminder that moderation can reduce risk without eliminating it; it is not a measure of how common malware is in mods generally.

When an archive or installer deserves extra caution
Some file formats and packaging choices make scanning harder. Nexus Mods says self-extracting files may be blocked, nested archives can prevent proper scanning, and password-protected archives cannot be scanned before release. A password-protected or unusually packaged download is not automatically malicious, but it prevents you from treating a clean scan as established.
Nexus Mods’ submission rules also restrict executables that communicate with the internet unless that behavior is crucial to the mod or utility. An online feature may have a legitimate explanation, but the project page should make it clear. If an executable or network connection is unexpected or unexplained, stop rather than granting access or bypassing a warning.

AI authorship, disclosure, and asset rights are separate checks
There is no reliable comparative statistic establishing that AI-generated mods have a higher or lower malware rate than human-made mods. AI origin alone therefore cannot tell you whether a file is safe; the particular release and its behavior matter.
Nexus Mods’ April 27, 2023 post said AI-generated mod content was not against its rules at that time, while noting that content could be removed after a credible complaint from an affected creator or rights holder. That dated statement is not a universal rule or a complete description of current policy. Nexus Mods’ current guidelines distinguish AI-Generated Content, AI Media, and AI Assisted tags. Check the platform’s current rules and the project’s disclosure where relevant; treat disclosure, asset rights, and malware screening as distinct questions.

If you already ran a suspicious mod file
Stop using the mod and do not run the file again. If it came from a mod platform, check that platform’s current security guidance and follow its instructions for identifying affected files and responding. CurseForge’s June 2023 incident page is useful historical documentation, but check whether any linked tools or instructions are still current before relying on them.
