You can play the PSP game Fate/EXTRA on a PC using PPSSPP, a PSP emulator. Install PPSSPP, provide your own lawful copy of the game in ISO or CSO format, then open it in the emulator. PPSSPP does not include the game.
What you need to play Fate/EXTRA on a PC
- A Windows, macOS, or other supported computer with PPSSPP installed.
- Your own lawful PSP game file in
.ISOor.CSOformat. PPSSPP does not distribute games. - A keyboard or compatible gamepad. A controller is optional; PPSSPP says its defaults generally work without extra setup.
Fate/EXTRA was released for PSP, so PPSSPP is the relevant PC emulation route documented by the emulator project. See the PPSSPP introduction and its FAQ for current setup guidance.
Install PPSSPP and open your game
- Download PPSSPP from the official project site. On Windows, the project documents both an installer and a portable ZIP option. Follow the current download page’s instructions for your operating system.
- Keep your game file in an accessible folder. PPSSPP expects you to supply a PSP game as an ISO or CSO file; it does not download or bundle Fate/EXTRA.
- Launch the game in PPSSPP. Use the emulator’s browsing interface to locate the folder containing your file, then select the game. If it does not appear, check that you are browsing the right folder and that the file is in a supported format.
Choose and configure controls
Start with PPSSPP’s default controls. Its getting-started guide says, “Generally, the defaults should be fine, unless you want to set up controllers and so on.”
Using a keyboard
To inspect or change keyboard bindings, open PPSSPP’s Control Mapping settings and assign keys to the PSP controls you want. The exact keyboard layout can vary with configuration, so check the bindings in your installed version rather than relying on a universal key chart.

Using a gamepad
A gamepad is optional. The PPSSPP FAQ documents built-in XInput and DirectInput support for Windows builds, but that does not guarantee identical behavior for every controller or system. Connect the controller, open Control Mapping if necessary, and check that the desired buttons are assigned.
For what each PSP button does in Fate/EXTRA, consult the controls section of the English Fate/EXTRA manual. The manual describes PSP hardware controls; PPSSPP maps those controls to your keyboard or gamepad.

Save progress and back it up
PPSSPP emulates the PSP Memory Stick as a folder on your computer. The Fate/EXTRA manual explains that PSP progress is saved to a Memory Stick; in PPSSPP, that storage is represented by files rather than a physical card.
- Save from inside the game. Use Fate/EXTRA’s in-game save option for ordinary game progress.
- Open PPSSPP’s Memory Stick folder. On Windows or macOS, choose File → Open Memory Stick. On other platforms, the current guide points to Settings → System → Show Memory Stick folder.
- Back up important saves. Copy the relevant save data from the Memory Stick folder to another safe location. The PPSSPP FAQ identifies

In-game saves versus save states
These are different kinds of data. An in-game save records progress through the game and is stored under PSP/SAVEDATA. A PPSSPP save state captures an emulator snapshot and is stored separately under PSP/PPSSPP_STATE. Save states are useful as an extra convenience, but they are not a substitute for saving through the game. PPSSPP’s system settings also offer save-state options, including configurable slots; the documented limit of up to 30 slots applies specifically to PPSSPP 1.20.

What to know about compatibility
PPSSPP’s compatibility reports include Fate/EXTRA entries for different regional releases. The Japanese 1.01 and US 1.00 entries are labeled “Perfect,” while the European report page includes historical community reports from different devices, including a Windows 64 entry marked “Playable” on PPSSPP 1.13.1. These are reports for particular versions and configurations, not a guarantee for every PC, game revision, or current emulator build. See the PPSSPP compatibility reports for the listed entries.

Troubleshoot a game that will not start or respond
- Confirm the file and folder. Make sure you selected your Fate/EXTRA ISO or CSO, rather than an unrelated file or the wrong directory.
- Check the game region and revision. Compatibility reports refer to specific regional builds and versions, so confirm which copy you are using before comparing results.
- Check input mappings. Open Control Mapping and verify that the keyboard or gamepad buttons are assigned as intended.
- Undo settings changes if needed. If the problem began after changing emulator options, PPSSPP’s system settings include a restore-defaults option. The documentation does not establish a single Fate/EXTRA-specific fix for every issue.
