Amazon says it draws on activity such as searches, purchases, Lists, reviews, and conversations with Alexa for Shopping. Some user-shared profile entries have sounded startlingly personal, but the available evidence does not show that About You causes people to spend more or suffer financial harm.
What is Amazon About You?
Amazon announced About You on May 13, 2026, as a place to view and edit information used to tailor shopping recommendations. According to Amazon’s announcement, the details may draw on conversations with Alexa for Shopping, product reviews you write, purchase history, saved Lists, and searches. Amazon says customers can add information, give feedback on specific details, or remove information they do not want used for personalization.
Amazon’s examples include recommendations shaped by a stated preference for pet food, gardening Lists, non-dairy shopping patterns, or a sourdough baking schedule. These are Amazon’s illustrations of how personalization might work, not independent tests of recommendation quality.
The company describes Alexa for Shopping as a personal shopper that remembers preferences, purchases, and conversations across devices. That is Amazon’s description of its service, not a technical explanation of how each About You profile entry is generated.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Why some profile entries have drawn attention
In an October 6, 2026 report, Fast Company described examples shared by individual users, including “Prepared for a Bluey-themed 2nd birthday celebration,” “Probably owns a Shark vaccuum,” and “Has flat buttocks.” The report also relayed other users’ descriptions of entries such as “husband has skinny legs,” “cusses when scared,” and an inferred preference for “brunettes with muscles.”
These are anecdotes reported by a journalist, not a representative sample. They do not establish that Amazon verified the statements, that they are accurate, or that other customers will see similar entries. Fast Company reported that the beta profile grouped details under Product Preferences, Interests & Hobbies, and Home & Family. Its report also said users could paste in a profile generated by another AI agent; Amazon’s announcement does not confirm that interface detail, so it should be treated as a reported feature that may change.

How to find and edit your About You profile
Amazon’s May 2026 announcement gave these routes. Labels may change, so use the closest current account or profile option if the interface differs.
- In the Amazon Shopping app: Open the app, tap the Me tab, tap your name, then choose About You.
- On desktop: Hover over your name above Account & Lists, click your name or “Who’s shopping?”, select a profile, and choose About You.
- Review the listed details: Use the available edit or feedback controls to correct a detail, add information, or remove a displayed detail you do not want used for personalization.
Amazon says About You is available in the Shopping app, mobile web, and desktop. The announcement provides the specific navigation above for the app and desktop; the mobile-web labels may differ.

What changing an About You entry does—and does not do
Editing or removing a displayed About You detail addresses information used for recommendation personalization. It should not be assumed to delete the underlying order, search, Alexa, List, or review records from your Amazon account. Amazon’s Privacy Notice separately describes categories of information it collects and uses, and says customers can make access or deletion requests to the extent required by applicable law.
Amazon’s notice also describes separate controls for store recommendations, browsing history, and personalized advertising. These controls have different purposes: changing a profile detail is not the same as managing browsing history, and turning off personalized advertising does not necessarily turn off account or store recommendations.

- Advertising preferences: Manage personalized advertising independently; this is not a universal personalization opt-out.
- Privacy requests: Use Amazon’s privacy process to request access to or deletion of personal information where applicable law provides that right.
Fast Company reported that shoppers could not directly opt out of the About You feature at the time of its October 2026 report. Amazon’s announcement describes editing and removing information, while its Privacy Notice lists other controls; neither establishes a universal About You opt-out toggle.

The available materials do not explain the precise model, thresholds, weighting, retention period, or source attribution behind each sentence in an individual profile. Amazon’s general Privacy Notice identifies broad data categories and purposes, but it is not technical documentation for every About You inference. The user-reported examples have not been independently verified, and the cited reporting does not measure how common such entries are.

There is also no About You-specific public statistic here for adoption, accuracy, or spending impact. Amazon reported in 2025 that more than 250 million customers had used Rufus, then its shopping assistant, and that customers using Rufus while shopping were over 60% more likely to make a purchase during that shopping trip. Those are Amazon-reported Rufus figures—not About You usage or evidence that About You causes additional purchases. The reviewed sources do not measure whether About You increases spending.
Amazon’s Privacy Notice says, in a section describing its stated information-sharing practices, “We are not in the business of selling our customers’ personal information to others.” That statement should not be read to mean Amazon never shares personal information; the notice also discusses sharing in specified circumstances.
