Steam’s review score, the reviews shown on a store page, and reviews returned by an API request can each cover different sets of reviews. To troubleshoot, first identify which result looks incomplete: the score, the store-page list, or an API response. Then check the relevant language, purchase, off-topic, ranking, and pagination settings.
First, identify what looks incomplete
- The score: Steam may calculate it from a narrower set of reviews than the full list of posted reviews.
- The store-page list: Steam ranks reviews for display, so the visible selection is not necessarily a complete chronological record.
- An API response: The request may be limited by pagination, endpoint choice, language, or other filters.
These differences do not, by themselves, show that Steam deleted reviews. Steam documents rules for which reviews affect a score, how reviews are selected for display, and how API results are filtered and paginated.
If the Steam score or store-page list looks incomplete
Review the off-topic setting
Steam Support says, “By default, the review score will not include reviews written during periods classified by Steam as ‘off-topic’.” Players can change this in Review Score Settings in store preferences to include all reviews. This setting concerns score calculation; a score that differs from the apparent volume of posted reviews is not automatically evidence of missing data.
Check the language scope
Steam may calculate the score using reviews in the viewer’s language when enough reviews exist in that language. If there are not enough, it uses reviews in all languages. The Support FAQ does not specify a numeric threshold, so there is no universal count to use when predicting which scope Steam will choose. Check the language associated with the score and displayed reviews before comparing totals.

Account for purchase type
For paid games, only reviews from people who purchased the game on Steam count toward the review score. The posted review list and aggregate score therefore need not represent the same population: reviews can appear in the list without counting toward that score.
Allow for ranked display
The store page’s Helpful view is not a complete chronological listing. Steam says it uses helpfulness votes together with a system intended to identify informative reviews to select and sort reviews shown on a store page. A review that is not prominent in that view may still be present; use the available sorting and filtering controls to inspect a different slice of the list.
If an API response is missing reviews
Use the current endpoint and paginate with its cursor
Steamworks marks the legacy /appreviews endpoint deprecated and documents IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews as its replacement. For a complete traversal, use the current method, begin with cursor="*" or omit the cursor, and pass the response’s cursor value into the next request. URL-encode cursor characters when constructing a URL.
Steam documents a maximum of 100 reviews per page and a default of 20. Those are page-size limits, not estimates of the total reviews available. Continue requesting pages until the response contains an empty review list.

Choose a sort that supports traversal
Helpful sorting is designed to find useful results and may widen its date range until it finds reviews. Steamworks recommends using Recent or Updated when traversing with a cursor until the list is empty. Helpful sorting is therefore not a reliable way to exhaust the full review set.
Check language and other filters
An empty languages field means English; set it to all to request every language. Also verify purchase type and review type. Then inspect filters that can narrow the response:

- Date range and date exclusion
- Minimum or maximum playtime
- Steam Deck usage, operating system, CPU, GPU, and device type
- Helpfulness quality ranking and off-topic filtering
For a broad inventory, remove filters that are not required and confirm the intended scope before interpreting a smaller response as missing reviews.
Check response status, rate limits, and caching
Check the HTTP status rather than assuming a successful-looking payload means the request was accepted as intended. A rate-limited request returns HTTP 429. Requests without a publisher key associated with the app share a lower rate limit; an app-associated key raises it. Steam also notes that anonymous responses may be cached for up to 10 minutes, so an immediate repeat request may not reflect a new result.

Update clients migrating from the legacy endpoint
The current method differs from the legacy endpoint in several ways that can make an integration appear incomplete or fail to interpret results:
- Current calls pass parameters in
input_json. - Language is a list named
languages. - The response no longer includes a
successfield; check HTTP status. total_matchingandday_range_usedare available in the current response.
Update request construction and response parsing together; do not rely on legacy fields or parameter names when calling the replacement service.

The documented score rules and API filters explain many apparent gaps, but they do not establish a universal fix for Steam client loading problems, local network failures, or account-specific moderation actions. If the issue is a page that will not load or an error unrelated to the returned review set, troubleshoot the client, connection, or account issue separately rather than assuming a review filter caused it.
