Build your travel charging kit around the devices you are actually taking: match each device’s charging requirements to a compatible wall charger and cable, then add a power bank if you expect to spend time away from outlets. For flights, carry spare power banks in your cabin baggage and check your airline’s rules; international plug adapters depend on your destination and the input ratings printed on your chargers.

Start with your devices, not a universal charging kit

Before packing, list each phone, tablet, laptop, camera, headphones, or other device you plan to use. For each one, note its charging connector, the charging methods it supports, and any requirements specified by its manufacturer. Then match those needs to the charger ports and cables you intend to bring.

  • Check the charger: Confirm it has a suitable port and supports the charging method required by the device.
  • Check the cable: Match both ends to the device and charger, and verify compatibility where the device or charger specifies it.
  • Reduce duplicates carefully: A multi-port charger may replace several chargers only if its ports and charging support meet the requirements of every device you plan to connect.

USB Power Delivery uses adjustable voltage, and USB Type-C cables have requirements that matter to compatibility. USB-IF’s overview explains the standard, but it does not establish one wattage or cable as suitable for every device: USB-IF: USB Power Delivery.

Pack cables for the itinerary

Bring the cables needed for the devices on your list. Don’t assume every USB-C cable or charger is interchangeable simply because a connector fits; check the charging support specified for the particular device, charger, and cable.

A spare cable is optional. It can be worthwhile if losing or damaging your only cable would leave an important device without a practical way to charge, but there is no need to carry duplicates automatically.

Decide whether you need a power bank

A power bank is useful when your itinerary includes stretches without access to an outlet. Choose one with a legible watt-hour (Wh) rating, and check the operating airline’s current restrictions before flying. For air travel, a power bank is a spare lithium battery and must go in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage, under FAA passenger guidance.

The FAA’s published passenger guidance gives these watt-hour thresholds for rechargeable batteries: FAA PackSafe: Lithium Batteries.

Battery rating FAA passenger guidance
0–100 Wh Allowed in carry-on baggage, subject to airline rules.
101–160 Wh Requires airline approval.
Above 160 Wh Forbidden for passenger transport under the stated FAA guidance.

These are FAA thresholds, not a guarantee that every airline will accept a particular power bank. The FAA warns that domestic and international airlines may set stricter limits on battery quantity or capacity. Check the airline operating each flight, keep the power bank accessible in cabin baggage, and protect it from damage and short circuit as the relevant guidance directs.

Follow the current onboard power-bank restrictions

An ICAO addendum approved on 27 March 2026 limits passengers to no more than two power banks and prohibits recharging power banks during a flight. ICAO also recommends against using a power bank to charge another portable electronic device onboard. The two-power-bank limit applies regardless of the number or energy rating of other spare batteries; individual carriers may impose stricter requirements. See the ICAO announcement on lithium-battery measures.

ICAO states: “Following the improvements agreed today, these devices will now be limited to two per passenger, and passengers will be prohibited from recharging them during flights.”

Choose an international plug adapter for your destination

There is no reliable universal adapter choice without knowing where you are going. First identify the outlet format at your destination, then check the input rating printed on each charger you plan to use. Select an adapter only after confirming it fits the destination outlet and works with the charger’s input rating.

A plug adapter addresses the physical connection to an outlet; do not assume that choosing one settles whether a charger can be used with the electrical supply at your destination. Destination-specific plug and voltage guidance depends on the destination and the equipment involved, so check the relevant requirements before travel.
