Use Steam’s documented IUserReviewsService.GetAppReviews method: https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/. Steam marks the older store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<appid>?json=1 route as deprecated and names this service method as its replacement. New integrations should send the required appid inside the input_json request parameter, then follow the returned cursor to retrieve more pages.
Build a request to GetAppReviews
The endpoint is a GET request to https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/. Steam documents appid as required and uses the input_json parameter to carry the method inputs. The API reference lists an optional publisher authentication key; Steam says associating a key with the app can provide a higher rate limit, but does not publish a numeric quota or reset interval on this page.
This pseudocode illustrates the service envelope and enum-style filter value. Replace APP_ID with the Steam application ID, and serialize and URL-encode the JSON value when constructing the actual query string.
GET https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/?input_json={"appid":APP_ID,"filter":"Recent","num_per_page":100,"cursor":"*"}
For a complete explanation of the Steam Web API request envelope, consult Steam’s GetAppReviews reference.

Choose filters and options for the job
Steam documents these principal request options. Defaults and limits below are those stated in its GetAppReviews reference.
| Option | Behavior |
|---|---|
filter |
Helpful is the default; available alternatives are Recent, Updated, and Funny. Helpful ranks reviews by helpfulness within a day range and can widen that range to find results. For paging through all reviews, Steam recommends Recent or Updated because Helpful is designed to return results. |
languages |
An API language-code list. Empty means English; all requests every language. |
day_range |
Applies only to Helpful. It defaults to 30 days, has a maximum of 365, and 0 means no limit. |
review_type |
Use all, positive, or negative to select review sentiment. |
purchase_type |
Defaults to Steam purchases only; options also include all reviews and non-Steam purchases. |
num_per_page |
Defaults to 20; maximum is 100. |
filter_offtopic_activity |
Off-topic activity is excluded by default. Pass false to include it. |
display_language |
Sets the language of review_score_desc; defaults to English. |
use_review_quality |
Helpful-filter option; defaults to true. |
date_range_start and date_range_end |
Unix timestamps that bound review creation dates. The start is ignored unless an end is also supplied. |
Retrieve pages with the cursor
- Request the first page. Omit
cursoror set it to*. ChooseRecentorUpdatedif your aim is to enumerate reviews, and setnum_per_pageto no more than 100. - Read the response cursor. The response includes a
cursorvalue. Use that exact value on the next request, URL-encoding it when placing it in a query string. - Continue until exhausted. Repeat with the returned cursor until the selected query returns an empty
reviewslist. Helpful is less suitable for exhaustive paging because its ranking and day-range behavior are designed to find results rather than serve as a straightforward enumeration.
Handle the response and legacy differences
The new response contains query_summary, reviews, cursor, day_range_used, and total_matching. Summary score and total fields are returned only on the first page and only when review_type is All.

Change from /appreviews |
Implementation consequence |
|---|---|
No legacy success field |
Check the HTTP status rather than relying on a response-body success flag. |
author.num_games_owned is no longer returned |
Do not expect that author property in the new response. |
weighted_vote_score is numeric |
Parse and handle it as a number, rather than as the string used by the old response. |
Each review has a new refunded field |
Account for this additional field when processing review records. |
total_matching and day_range_used are new |
These fields can inform interpretation of the query and its result set. |
Steam states that requests without an associated key share a lower rate limit and that a rate-limited call returns HTTP 429. The reference does not specify the limit or its reset interval, so handle 429 responses without assuming a particular quota or retry window.

| Current service method | Legacy route | |
|---|---|---|
| Endpoint | IUserReviewsService.GetAppReviews at Steam Web API |
store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<appid>?json=1; documented at Steamworks User Reviews – Get List |
| Request shape | Required appid in input_json, with service enum values and a languages list |
Query-string parameters such as language |
| Pagination and response | Cursor-based pagination and the updated response fields described above | Legacy response shape; Steam marks the route deprecated |
Steam’s legacy documentation describes the route as a way to “get a dump of reviews on an application in Steam,” but its current reference explicitly identifies GetAppReviews as the replacement. For new work, implement the service method rather than starting another integration on the deprecated route.
