After a studio layoff, start by defining the work you can realistically pursue, then search studio career pages and game-specific channels, tailor your materials, and build in time for feedback. The market is difficult: GDC’s 2026 State of the Game Industry report found that 28% of surveyed respondents—and 33% of U.S. respondents—had been laid off in the previous two years. Nearly half of respondents who had experienced layoffs had not found another job. These are survey findings, not an estimate of any individual applicant’s chances.

Start by defining the search you can sustain

Before applying, write down the constraints and evidence that should guide your search. This is a planning exercise, not a prescription for which role you should pursue.

  • Target roles: list job titles that match your experience, plus adjacent roles you would genuinely consider.
  • Skills and proof: identify your strongest skills and the shipped work, portfolio pieces, or other examples that demonstrate them.
  • Seniority: note the level at which your experience is best supported; compare it with each posting rather than relying on title alone.
  • Location and authorization: record where you can work, whether remote work is essential, and any work-authorization limits relevant to the employer.
  • Employment needs: set minimum compensation and benefits needs, and decide whether contract or fixed-term work is an option for you.

These criteria help you filter openings consistently. They also make it easier to explain your search clearly when asking a former colleague or mentor for advice.

Where are game studios posting jobs?

Use several channels rather than assuming one listing site captures the market. Check studio career pages directly and look at game-specific resources such as the IGDA Career Center. IGDA also points job seekers to Discord job-opportunities and looking-for-work channels, local chapters, and Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Its Resource Consolidation Initiative aggregates resources for developers affected by layoffs and people advancing their careers.

Listings and community links can change. When you find an opening through a job board or group, confirm it on the employer’s own site if possible and check that it is still accepting applications.

Compare openings before spending time on an application

For each role, check the factors that affect both fit and feasibility:

  • Responsibilities, seniority, and how closely the required skills match your experience.
  • Whether the portfolio or work samples you can share provide relevant evidence.
  • Location, remote eligibility, and any work-authorization requirements.
  • Compensation, benefits, employment type, and contract duration, where stated.
  • Project and studio information you can verify, rather than assumptions based on a listing.
  • The time and travel cost of any event or in-person opportunity connected to the search.

If a posting leaves an important point unclear, treat it as unknown rather than assuming the role meets your needs.

Make your resume and portfolio easy to assess

Tailor your application to the specific role. Put the most relevant work, responsibilities, and evidence of skills where a hiring team can find them quickly. In a portfolio, explain your contribution to a project and distinguish it from the work of the wider team. Choose examples that demonstrate the capabilities the posting asks for, rather than including material simply because it is available.

Ask a trusted peer or mentor to review your materials. IGDA’s Career Center describes mentorship and career support, including resume advice and portfolio reviews; GDC Career Day has described resume, portfolio, and LinkedIn reviews. Availability and event details can change, so check the current program before relying on a review opportunity.

Use professional relationships without treating them as a shortcut

Tell former teammates and trusted contacts what roles you are pursuing, and ask for an introduction when it is appropriate. You can also take part in relevant IGDA Discord channels, chapters, and SIGs to learn about openings and maintain professional connections. These are ways to discover opportunities and exchange information—not guarantees of a referral or a job.

IGDA’s Career Center lists these community and mentorship resources. Its FAQ advises people exploring game development to research areas of interest and the skills they require; it also notes that routes into the industry vary with location and networking ability.

Track applications and adjust based on what happens

Keep a simple search log so you can see what you have tried and avoid losing track of follow-ups. Record the studio, role, date, source or referral, version of your materials, follow-up, and outcome. There is no evidence-based application count or schedule that guarantees a result.

If applications are not leading to screening conversations, review whether you are targeting suitable roles and whether your resume makes the relevant evidence clear. Ask a peer or mentor for specific feedback before changing everything at once. If you are getting interviews but not progressing, use the stages where you stall to identify what to practice or clarify.

Consider adjacent work when it matches your skills

Depending on your discipline and interests, it may be worth considering roles beyond game studios. GDC Career Day describes recruiters from studios and adjacent industries, but that does not establish which fields or positions are a fit for a particular worker. Assess each opportunity against your skills, work samples, location, authorization, compensation needs, and employment preferences; you do not need to accept unpaid work or relocate to pursue a search.

Use survey figures as context, not as a personal forecast

GDC’s 2026 State of the Game Industry report, based on more than 2,300 industry professionals, says 28% of survey respondents had been laid off in the previous two years; among U.S. respondents, the figure was 33%. GDC also reported that nearly half of respondents who had experienced layoffs had not found another job. These are self-reported survey results about respondents, not an individual applicant’s probability of finding work.

Other GDC figures describe different surveys and time periods. In the 2025 State of the Game Industry survey, 11% of developers reported a layoff in the previous year, with reported impact varying by role. In GDC’s 2025 U.S. Game Development Salaries report, 40% of unemployed respondents said they had submitted at least 100 applications. Do not read these results as a direct year-to-year comparison: the surveys, questions, populations, and windows differ.

Check current career events and local support

GDC Career Day has described a Career Faire, portfolio and resume reviews, LinkedIn reviews, and career sessions for professionals affected by layoffs and others exploring opportunities. Programs, dates, and access details may change; check the GDC Career Day page for current information before making plans. Consider travel, access, and time costs alongside the potential value of attending.

Layoff benefits and legal rights depend on jurisdiction and employment arrangement. For questions about eligibility, deadlines, or severance, consult the applicable official local government or labor-agency resources rather than assuming the rules are the same everywhere.
