Buy only if what you can play today is worth the price, and treat future features and continued support as uncertain. If that does not work for you, waiting or passing is reasonable.
Start with what the game offers now
Separate playable content from planned additions. Check which modes, features, and content are actually available, and whether the current build’s stability meets your expectations. If the game is in Early Access, read the store page’s current-state description rather than treating the purchase as a promise of a finished game.

Valve says Steam Early Access is “not meant to be a form of pre-purchase,” and advises customers to buy based on the current state, not on future promises that may not be realized. Steamworks’ Early Access guidance also asks developers to explain what is playable, how the game may differ at full release, and how they plan to communicate with players.
Ask whether today’s version is worth the price
Imagine that no planned feature arrives. Would the game you can play now still justify its price? If the answer depends on an unshipped mode, roadmap milestone, or promised expansion, you are taking on more uncertainty than if you are satisfied with the existing build.

Compare official updates with the store page
Read the latest official patch notes, news posts, and roadmap updates, then compare them with the current store description. Look for specific progress, changes to plans, and explanations of what remains unfinished. Check when statements were made: an old roadmap is not evidence that its dates or goals still stand.
Valve says Steam may add a notice to an Early Access page if the game has gone more than 12 months without a qualifying update build or update-type announcement. That Steam notice is a platform signal, not a forecast: its presence does not tell you what will happen next, and its absence does not establish that development is active or healthy.

Check who is responsible for development and support
Review the game listing’s developer and publisher credits, the studio’s own statements, and the official channels for technical support. If layoffs have been reported, distinguish confirmed announcements from speculation and note their dates. A report about a studio does not by itself establish which projects, teams, or services will be affected.
For example, GamesRadar+ reported leadership departures, mass layoffs, and player refund concerns involving Ashes of Creation. That is a reported case illustrating uncertainty, not evidence that another game will face the same outcome or that buyers elsewhere have a refund entitlement. GamesRadar+’s report describes that particular situation.

Check refund terms at the exact checkout
Refund eligibility depends on where and how you buy. Read the policy attached to the actual checkout and account for local rules; a policy on one platform does not automatically apply to a console store, mobile store, or other payment provider.

These are platform-specific examples, not universal refund rights. Do not assume that a game’s development changing or stopping will automatically qualify you for a refund; check the applicable policy and terms before paying.

Choose whether to buy now, wait, or pass
Use the same checks for each option: current playable content, recency and substance of official updates, dependence on future features, price versus today’s value, clarity about support, refund eligibility, and whether waiting could reveal useful information.
